Bhavya JainContent Author
Science is a foundation for everything around us. It has always been a strong career choice for students in India. It is common belief that there are two major streams for students after class 12th: BTech or MBBS, but Science is such a multifaceted subject. It offers more than 50 specializations and fields of study, from Physics to Agriculture there are a plethora of majors students can choose from.
The eligibility for Science course is different for every specialization and college. In general, candidates should have a good passing score in Class 12 in respective streams. Likewise, the salary is also different. For eg - average salary after BSc Computer Science and BSc Nursing are different. BSc CS average salary is 10.3 LPA, and 3.1 LPA is for BSc Nursing.
There are multiple specialised Science Courses in India. Out of these some are pretty common like: Physics, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Information Technology. But there are some courses like Astrobiology and Nano Science and Technology that are a little different than the others.
Astrobiology deals with the study of origin, evolution, and distribution of life in the universe. Whereas Nano Technology functions in manipulating matter at the atomic and molecular scale.
Yes, students with humanities in class 12th can opt for a Science degree. But They can not study core Science subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology. Degrees like Psychology, Sociology, Economics and some design courses are open to humanities students.
Candidates must check the eligibility criteria of a particular course on the official website of the college they wish to apply to.

According to popular belief, the hardest Science degrees are those with relation to medicine, engineering, aerospace and theoretical physics or chemistry. But apart from that, finding a topic hard or easy is entirely subjective to each student.
A BSc honors course requires students to specialize in a particular subject or study. Often done in a core Science subject, it requires a great deal of research and a dissertation at the end of the course.
A general BSc course mandates students to study a wide range of foundational Science topics.
Science Course Specializations
As discussed above, Science has many specializations. Choosing the right specialization for yourself is the first move towards the right direction for a candidate. Selecting an area of expertise first matters because candidates will further select colleges and exams based on it. Some of the widely chosen specializations by candidates are rooted in technology, healthcare, and applied research.r
The following table mentions some of the popular Science specializations in India:

Before selecting the right specialisation a candidate should first understand their interests, academic strengths, and career goals. This will help them understand the right fit for them. A specialisation helps shortlist the colleges and exams the candidate wants to choose for their degree.
It is not conventional, but many institutions allow students to change their specializations in the first semester or the first year of their degree. It is a given that the change of specialisation is bound to a stream. Let's say a student with PCM in class 12th chose Computer Science as a specialization. The student later wants to change the specialization. He/she will be restricted to options like Data Science, AI & ML, and cybersecurity because that's the most similar to the previous one.
How to Apply for Science Course
To apply for a degree in Science, candidates have to choose a specialization first. Then select a college that offers that specialization. Finally they have to check the eligibility criteria for the course. Almost all courses need at least passing marks in class 12th subjects. They have to match their specialization with the core subjects they had in class 12th.
Then they have to give competitive exams accepted by the college. Following are the types of entrance exams in India:
- National Level Exams: JEE Main, CUET, SAT, etc. for UG programs and GATE, CUET PG, and NEET PG for PG programs, are popular national level exams. They are for entrance in national and state level universities like IITs, AIIMS, NITs, IIITs, etc.
- State Level Exams: KCET, AP EAMCET, MHT CET, etc. are state level exams for Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra.
- University Level Exams: VIT Vellore, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Amrita School of Engineering are some of the most popular private colleges for Scienc course. they conduct their own entrance exams.
BTech Eligibility

Yes, many Science specializations have both practical and theoretical elements. Specializations in medicine and engineering particularly involve a lot of lab work and on-ground participation from students for them to understand the application of their theoretical knowledge better. But specializations like economics focus more on theoretical case studies and hypothetic scenarios.
A Science specialisation will help students in getting to know a certain topic in a more in depth, analytical light. Students will have more confidence in a subject before pursuing it in their post graduate degree. It will build strong problem solving and research capabilities in students.
Science Courses Entrance Exams
In India, exams are conducted by national, state and private universities for both UG and PG levels. Many state and private universities accept the national level exam scores. But some colleges also accept class 12th scores instead of a formal entrance examination for UG degrees. Similarly, for PG exams, admission can be based on an UG degree score or on a national, state or university level exam score.

No, IITs rely strictly on JEE Mains and JEE Advanced scores for admission. SAT scores could be considered for NRIs (Non-Resident Indians) but not for domestic candidates. Also, JEE scores open doors to more colleges other than IITs, which gives candidates a higher opportunity to pursue the degree of their liking.
Candidates need to understand that sometimes failure is an option they didn't see coming, and therefore also apply to other colleges, keeping a backup plan. Other mistakes include not checking the required subjects, missing guidelines, and not examining eligibility criteria thoroughly.

Instead of understanding the academics and placement opportunities offered by colleges, students often chase the popularity and fame of a college. Candidates should focus if the ROI is good enough.
First, a good score in class 12th board exams is important. Similarly, a good score in any competitive exam matters the most. The criteria of best depends on the student.
Candidates should research the college and check if they offer the specialisation the student is interested in. Checking the eligibility criteria and fees is also an important step.

Science Courses FAQs
Candidates can refer to this section for Science course FAQs.
That entirely depends on the student and the career path they'd like to take. A Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) degree is more practical and uses a skill-based learning model. It is ideal for candidates interested in software development. A BSc CS degree is more theoretical and focuses on algorithms and mathematics. This degree is ideal for students interested in research work and a master's degree after graduating.
Choosing the best specialisation is subjective for every candidate. It depends on the interests, career vision, and academic strength of a candidate. A candidate should choose a specialisation based on their class 12th stream. A student with PCB in class 12th would do better in a medicine centered stream as compared to someone who had PCM. Admission of Science Courses also depends on class 12th stream.
Students that are not interested in pursuing a BTech degree often turn towards BSc courses. Some popular specializations are Computer Science, Data Science, and Information Technology (IT).
BSc specializations allow students to focus on one subject entirely. Students interested in such a thing, popularly choose Mathematics/Statistics, Physics or Chemistry as specializations.
