IIT Delhi Launches ‘Jigyasa’

IIT Delhi Jigyasa: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has launched a new outreach initiative, ‘Jigyasa’, designed to make scientific research more accessible to the public. Led by the Institute’s Academic Outreach Office, the initiative aims to bridge the gap between cutting-edge laboratory work and everyday understanding by showcasing the contributions of institutions like IIT Delhi. The inaugural event under ‘Jigyasa’ was held at J.C. Bose University of Science and Technology, YMCA, Faridabad, as part of the National Technology Day celebrations.

As part of the ‘Jigyasa’ initiative, IIT Delhi researchers, including faculty and students, will present their work at various science and technology institutions and beyond. The initiative seeks to simplify complex scientific concepts in an informal setting, keep the public informed about recent breakthroughs, and inspire the next generation by fostering curiosity and understanding of the scientific process.

The day celebrated innovation and recent advancements in science and technology, beginning with inspiring lectures by Prof. Sushil Kumar Tomar, Vice Chancellor of J.C. Bose University of Science and Technology, YMCA, and Chief Guest Prof. Maithili Sharan from the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences at IIT Delhi. Their talks highlighted the history of India’s nuclear programme and underscored the significance of developing indigenous technologies.

Students, research scholars, and scientists from IIT Delhi and J.C. Bose University of Science and Technology, YMCA, showcased their work through interactive poster presentations and demonstrations, sparking engaging discussions with visitors. In the post-lunch session, Prof. Chetan Arora from IIT Delhi’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering provided an insightful overview of the Institute’s ongoing research in the field of artificial intelligence.

Q:   How long is BTech in IIT Delhi?
A:

The duration of IIT Delhi BTech courses is four years. The full-time degree programme is divided into eight semesters. During the BTech course duration, the students have to do compulsory foundation courses in the areas of basic sciences, humanities, engineering sciences, and social sciences along with the departmental core and elective courses. Moreover, IIT Delhi offers internship opportunities to UG students, the duration of short-term internships is 1.5 to 2 months and is 6 months for long-term internships.

Apart from this, the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi also offer an integrated BTech and MTech programme. The duration of this dual degree course is five years against the standard duration of both the courses - BTech (four years) and MTech (two years). 

Q:   Is PhD available in IIT Delhi?
A:

Yes, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi offers PhD in full-time and part-time modes. The doctoral-level course is made available by almost all the departments of the institute. Candidates who meet the required eligibility criteria and have the relevant work experience become eligible for admission. Currently, IIT Delhi Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology department is offering joint PhD programme with the University of Queensland.

Q:   Is it worth doing MSc from IIT Delhi?
A:

Yes, IIT Delhi is a good institute for MSc aspirants. The institute has got a good overall rank from NIRF in the 2023 rankings. It has been ranked at the third spot among top colleges in the country. Moreover, IIT Delhi also provide placements support. As per its 2023 placement report, the median package offered to PG (2-year) candidates was INR 12.50 LPA. Some of the top companies that participate in its placements drive are Microsoft, Cisco, Accenture, etc.
