To begin with, you need to relax in case your score is low in JEE Mains 2020. This is not the end. Let’s figure out what could be done. There are two kinds of students, one who is appearing and one who has appeared for the JEE Mains.
Case 1
Let’s talk about if you have cleared or dropped a year and have not scored well. Now, you must have questions like “What will I do?”, “How would I face the society?” and a lot of confusion and eventually, it may demotivate you.
Explore colleges based on JEE Main
You should now accept that you have a low score and do not worry, it happens. The most important question you need to ask is, “What should I do next at this stage?”
In a drop out’s situation, there is a necessity to take admission, you don’t the option to drop again.
At this time, just rethink, do you really have an interest in doing engineering?
Do you like to study PCM? If you are clear enough that you have to do engineering then it is great. Now, look at all the different entrance exams you have applied for, such as BITS, VIT, SRM, UPSEE, etc. and focus on the upcoming exams. They will provide you with a good opportunity to pursue your dream of engineering.
Fill all the state forms such as Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Here, you could get admissions into government colleges on the basis of your JEE score. It doesn’t matter whether you have qualified JEE cutoff or not.
Simultaneously, fill the exam forms of reputed private colleges and give their entrances such as Manipal, NIRMA, etc.
If you think that engineering is not your thing then you can switch to any course or opt for B.Sc in good colleges such as BHU, AU, etc.
In this way, you can pursue your dream from an IIT or NIT. Also, you can do M.Tech from any IIT or NIT through GATE.
Case 2
If you are an appearing student then you should stop thinking and over analysing yourself.
After your class 12th and JEE preparation both simultaneously, you should re-think what you want to achieve in life. Ask yourself, “Is engineering the only way to do it?”
If not, try to find out the thing that you want to do.
Things you should keep in mind before dropping:
- You can study hard.
- You like the subjects PCM.
- Deep inside you know that you can do it.
- You are ready to take a risk and it will not affect you.
Lastly, do research, find every single possibility and based on the facts and logic take a decision.

With a JEE Main percentile of 90.94 and CRL rank ~1.4 Lacs (female, general category), you have realistic chances in mid-tier NITs (later rounds), state government colleges, and strong private universities in Tamil Nadu and Bangalore for ECE/EEE. Top NITs/IIITs are unlikely, but good regional option

With a JEE Main 2026 rank of 400,510 (≈ 70 percentile), admission to NITs, IIITs, or top GFTIs through JoSAA counseling is not possible.
Why?

With a JEE Main CRL rank of ~79,364 and an EWS category rank of ~11,884, you have a realistic chance of securing CSE in several mid-tier NITs, newer IIITs, and some GFTIs. Top NITs (Trichy, Surathkal, Warangal, Allahabad) are out of reach, but options like NIT Jalandhar, NIT Hamirpur, IIIT Kota, III
