Advantages and Disadvantages of Taking CUET Exam

Q&A Icon
Commonly asked questions
Q:   Do the Class 12 marks affect CUET results?
A:

No, Class 12th board marks are not directly considered in CUET UG 2026 result calculation. The CUET UG score is solely based on the candidate’s performance in the entrance test. However, to be eligible for admission through CUET UG, candidates must secure at least 50% aggregate marks in Class 12th (or equivalent qualifying examination) as per the eligibility criteria of individual universities.

It’s important to note that while CUET UG acts as a common entrance test for undergraduate admissions in central, state, and participating universities, Class 12th and Class 10th marks may be used only in tie-breaking situations: when two or more candidates secure the same CUET percentile.

CUET UG 2026 offers a standardised platform for students from all education boards across India, allowing them to select subjects of their choice. Participating universities will consider candidates’ subject-wise CUET scores for admission to respective undergraduate programmes.

Q:   Why is CUET important?
A:

NTA conducts Common University Entrance Test or CUET for admission to UG courses of central, state, private or deemed universities. Untill 2022, each university had its distinct entrance exam or admission criteria for UG courses. To create fairness in admission process, CUET was introduced. It is common entrance exam for all central universities. Some of the important factors why CUET is important are:

  • It gives equal opprtunities to candidates during the admission process. The pressure of immese weightage to 12th marks is reduced.
  • Cutoffs will be based on CUET score/percentile ensuring fair mechanism for students.
  • CUET puts an end to subjective bias. Candidates can appear for their domain subject exam and get admission on the basis of the score obtained in CUET.
Q:   How many times is CUET conducted in a year?
A:

National Testing conducts CUET UG exam annually. Candidates who will register for CUET 2026 exam will have to report at the alloted exam centre on given date and time, failing which such candidates will not be able to appear for the exam again in the current academic year. CUET 2026 will be a Computer Based Test. CUET exam for each subject will be scheduled in multiple sessions depending upon the number of registrations recieved for each subject.

Q:   Who conducts the CUET exam?
A:

The CUET UG exam is conducted by NTA for admission to Central and other universities of India. University Grants Commission (UGC) was the erstwhile conducting authority of the exam, till 2019, after which NTA was assigned the responsibility to conduct the exam. However, UGC still holds accountability for the exam and announces relevant information and notifications regarding CUET UG.

Q:   How many courses are offered through CUET UG?
A:

CUET UG scores are accepted by more than 150 universities across India. The number of UG courses offered through CUET UG varies from university to university. Top central university like Delhi University offers 79 UG courses, BHU offers 18 UG courses and so forth. Candidates seeking admission to central, state, private or deemed universities throiugh CUET scores must check the list of courses offered and eligibility for each course.

Q:   What is the latest pattern for CUET UG exam?

As per the latest CUET UG exam pattern, the CUET UG will now consist of 23 domain subjects, 13 langauges and General Test. The exam pattern for CUET UG is as follows:

Yes, OBC candidates applying for CUET must upload the OBC-NCL certificate in online CUET application form. The OBC-NCL certificate must be issued in consonance with the latest guidelines of the Government of India. If candidate fail to upload the OBC-NCL certificate (issued on or after 01 April, 2024) at the time of CUET 2025 registration, then in such case they will have to upload a declaration in lieu of OBC-NCl certificate to that effect.

Q:   What if I get compartment, then will I be able to appear for the CUET and get admission in college?
A:

Yes, it is possible to appear for compartment exams and still appear for CUET and secure college admission within the same academic year.

Educational boards conduct compartment exams for students who performed poorly in one or two subjects during their board exams. These compartment exams are typically held a few months after the regular board exams and offer students an opportunity to reattempt any subjects they failed, thereby improving their overall pass percentage.

In situations where a student does not meet the admission requirements for college due to failing one or more subjects in their board exams, they can opt to take compartment exams with the aim of enhancing their grades. Once the results of the compartment exams are published, students can utilize their improved scores to fulfill the CUET college admission criteria.

It's essential to keep in mind that the admission procedures for each college and university can differ, and some institutions may have specific additional requirements or application deadlines for students intending to take compartment exams. Therefore, it is advisable to inquire about the admission policies regarding compartment exams at the respective college or university.

Q:   Does the order in which I select courses matter in the CUET application form?
A:

Yes, the order in which you pick your courses is important in CUET UG 2026 application form. The first course you select is considered your highest priority, whereas the one you select last is seen as your least preferred option. Nonetheless, this doesn't imply you need to start with your least favored course.

It's important to arrange your courses according to your preference, placing the one you prefer most at the top of your list and the one you prefer least at the bottom. This ordering matters because in the CUET admissions process, your first choice is usually considered initially, and if that's full, the subsequent preferences are looked into.

Therefore, if you have a clear favourite for your first-choice course, ensure it's at the top of your list, even if it appears at the end in the choice filling section. If you're uncertain about your top choice, it might be wise to put a second option as your first preference to enhance your likelihood of getting into the university. In the end, your course selections should reflect your personal interests and career aspirations, and be listed in the order of your preference.

How is CUET 2026 Normalisation Applied?

Since CUET exam is conducted over multiple days, slots, and subjects, there is a need to implement the normalisation procedure. Some of the candidates might have ended up attempting a relatively tougher set of questions when compared to other sets. The candidates who attempted the comparatively tougher examination are likely to get lower marks as compared to those who attempted the easier one; the scores of the students across shifts are not directly comparable. There is a need for normalising the marks across shifts to make them amenable to such comparisons.

According to the CUET 2026 normalisation process stated by NTA, the raw score of each candidate in each subject will be normalised using the Equi-percentile method. This is done separately for each subject for which examination is held in multiple shifts. Normalisation process will not be implemented on subjects which will be held in single shift.

On the basis of the CUET UG score, candidates are offered admission to UG programme of the participating colleges. NameStateNIRF Rank 2024
Jawaharlal Nehru UniversityDelhi2
Jamia Millia IslamiaDelhi3
Banaras Hindu UniversityUttar Pradesh5
University of DelhiDelhi6
Aligarh Muslim UniversityUttar Pradesh8
Q:   How is CUET normalized score calculated?
A:

The CUET (Common University Entrance Test) normalised scores are derived through a systematic process that ensures fairness across different testing sessions. Here’s a detailed breakdown of how these scores are calculated:

  1. Raw Marks Collection: Initially, each candidate's raw marks are collected after they complete the exam. These marks represent the number of correct answers each candidate achieved.

  2. Percentile Calculation: For each candidate, their percentile is calculated based on how their raw marks compare to those of other candidates who took the exam in the same session. This percentile indicates the relative standing of a candidate among their peers within that specific session.

  3. Session Equating: The process involves multiple testing sessions that may occur over several days for the same subject. The percentiles calculated for each session are then equated to ensure consistency in scoring across all sessions.

  4. Normalisation Process: After equating the percentiles, they are converted into normalised marks. This step helps to standardise scores across varying exam conditions and candidate populations.

  5. Handling Smaller Sessions: In instances where a session has a limited number of candidates, those scores are aggregated with larger sessions. This clubbing ensures that every candidate's performance is compared against a more substantial and diverse group, leading to a more reliable and equitable normalised score.

Q:   Can CUET normalisation reduce marks?
A:

CUET normalisation procss refers to a process of adjusting scores to account for variations in difficulty between different sessions of CUET exam. The aim is to ensure fairness and equity among students who may have taken different sessions of the same exam.

The normalization process shouldn't inherently reduce marks for students. Instead, it aims to adjust scores in a way that maintains the integrity and validity of the assessment. CUET Normalization might involve scaling scores, adjusting grade boundaries, or applying statistical techniques to ensure that the difficulty level of the assessment doesn't disadvantage any particular group of students.

Q:   Will normalization process apply in CUET UG?
A:

Normalisation process will apply in CUET UG if the exam is conducted in multiple sessions. Earlier, in CUET 2024 the normalisation process was eradicated as the subject wise examination was held in a single day window. CUET normaliation process is applied to adjust socres for variations in difficulty of level in different session of CUET exam.
