JEE Main is one of the most important engineering entrance examinations in India. Every year, lakhs of students appear for the exam to seek admission to NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and other participating institutes. JEE Main is also the qualifying examination for students who want to appear for JEE Advanced. In this article, we have discussed the eligibility requirements for appearing in the exam. Understand these requirements before applying for the exam this year.

JEE Main Eligibility Criteria

JEE Main 2027 Eligibility Criteria

JEE Main 2027 Eligibility Criteria: One of the biggest questions before starting preparation is: Am I eligible for JEE Main 2027? The NTA JEE Main eligibility rules are relatively straightforward, but there are several points that students need to understand before filling the JEE Main application form. These include:

  • Class 12 passing year
  • Age limit, subjects studied in Class 12
  • Minimum marks required for admission
  • Eligibility of droppers and the difference between being eligible to appear for JEE Main and being eligible for admission to a particular college.

🔴 Latest update on JEE Main 2027 Eligibility: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has not yet released the official JEE Main 2027 Information Bulletin. The official JEE Main website currently lists the 2026 Information Bulletin as the latest bulletin. Therefore, the JEE Main 2027 eligibility criteria should be treated as expected criteria based on the latest available official rules, unless NTA announces any changes.

JEE Mains 2027 Age Limit Criteria

Is there any age limit to appear in JEE Mains 2027? The answer is NO.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) does not generally impose an age limit for appearing in the examination. This means that a candidate does not automatically become ineligible for JEE Main merely because they are older than the typical Class 12 candidate.

📅 Candidates aspiring for JEE Advanced must note that there is an upper age limit to be eligible for the IIT JEE Advanced exam.
  • General / OBC / EWS: Must be born on or after October 1, 2002.
  • SC / ST / PwD: Must be born on or after October 1, 1997 (5-year age relaxation).

How Many Attempts are There for NTA JEE Main 2027?

There is a limit on attempts in JEE Main. A candidate can appear for the exam three times in three consecutive years from the year of passing class 12. Since JEE Main is conducted in two sessions every year (January and April), candidates can appear in both sessions during each eligible year. This means a student gets up to six attempts over three years.

  • A student passing class 12 in 2027 can appear for the exam in 2027, 2028 and 2029.
  • A candidate who passed the exam in 2025 can appear for the exam in 2025, 2026, and 2027,
  • A student who passed Class 12 in 2026 can appear in 2026, 2027 and 2028.
⚠️ Important Rule

JEE Main vs JEE Advanced Attempt Limits

JEE Main

Up to 3 attempts in 3 consecutive years.

JEE Advanced

Maximum 2 attempts in 2 consecutive years.

Skipping a year in the middle will not extend the attempt limit period. For instance, if a student completes Class 12 in 2027 but chooses not to take the JEE Main in 2028, they can still sit for it in 2029. However, they will not be able to appear in 2030, even if they skipped 2028.

Minimum Marks Needed in Class 12 for JEE Main Eligibility

There are no minimum marks needed in Class 12 to be able to appear for JEE Mains 2027. However, institutes like IITs/NITs/IIITs/GFTIs impose a minimum marks requirement in Class 12 to be eligible for admission.

  • Admission to NITs, IIITs and CFTIs through the relevant JoSAA/CSAB is subject to the candidate having at least 75% marks in Class 12 or being in the top 20 percentile of their respective board.
  • For SC/ST candidates, the corresponding qualifying mark is 65%.

Therefore, a student should understand the difference:

Appearing for JEE Main ≠ automatically being eligible for admission to every institute through JEE Main. A candidate may be able to appear for the examination even without 75% in Class 12, but may need to fulfil the prescribed Class 12 marks/top-20-percentile condition at the time of admission to certain institutes.

❓ Common Query

What is the JEE Main State Code of Eligibility, and what is its importance?

The state code of eligibility in JEE Main is the code of the state where you passed your Class 12 (or equivalent) qualifying exam. It does not depend on your home address, birthplace, or native state.

🎯 Why it matters: It is crucial because it determines your eligibility for the home state quota (50% seats) in National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and other participating state engineering colleges during counselling.

JEE Main 2027 Eligibility for Droppers

This is one of the most important sections for students who are taking a drop year. A dropper is a candidate who has already completed Class 12 but is taking another year to prepare for JEE Main and improve their chances of getting admission to a preferred engineering college.

Can droppers appear for JEE Main 2027?

Yes, droppers can appear for JEE Main 2027, provided they satisfy the applicable Class 12 passing-year eligibility condition.

Consider three students:

  • Rahul: Passed Class 12 in 2026 and is taking a drop in 2026-27 → Eligible for JEE Main 2027👍
  • Priya: Passed Class 12 in 2025 and took a drop after JEE Main 2026 → Eligible for JEE Main 2027👍
  • Aman: Passed Class 12 in 2024 and wants to appear for JEE Main 2027 → Not Eligible for JEE Main 2027👎
