CBSE Result 2025: As students across India await the CBSE Result 2025 for Classes 10 and 12, expected to be announced on May 2, 2025, a key decision by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has once again sparked debate — the Board will not release a topper or merit list for these crucial examinations.
But what do students and the larger academic community think about this move?
Poll Results Say It All: 61% Support CBSE’s Decision
In a recent poll conducted by Shiksha.com, respondents were asked whether they agreed with CBSE’s policy of not releasing a CBSE 10th 12th topper list. Here’s how over 3,000 participants responded:
- Yes, it reduces pressure – 61%
- No, recognition is needed – 21%
- Neutral, no strong opinion – 11%
- Not aware of the decision – 7%
A clear majority of students and education stakeholders agree with the board's move, signaling growing awareness about the mental health impact of excessive academic competition. For many, the decision is a progressive step toward a more inclusive, less stressful learning environment.
Why did CBSE Stop Releasing 10th 12th Topper List?
The CBSE first stopped publishing the topper list during the COVID-19 pandemic, when exams were either canceled or held in blended formats. The decision, originally taken due to exceptional circumstances, was later continued by the Board to minimize unhealthy comparison and competition among students.
CBSE officials have repeatedly stated that the aim is to celebrate all students’ efforts, not just a few high scorers. The idea is to encourage students to focus on learning, rather than just marks.
Academic Experts Weigh In
Educational psychologists and school counselors have long supported such reforms.
“Ranking students can create enormous pressure, especially for teenagers. It can negatively impact mental health and lead to anxiety or depression. Not having a topper list allows students to define success on their own terms,” says Dr. Renu Malhotra, a Delhi-based education consultant.
Recognition Still Matters to Some
Students can check the CBSE result 2026 on the official websites- results.cbse.nic.in, cbse.gov.in, cbse.nic.in. They will need to enter their roll number and other details as mentioned in the CBSE admit card 2026 to check their result.
On the flip side, 21% of poll respondents felt that recognition is important. Many argue that students who work hard and top the exams deserve to be acknowledged publicly.
Some parents and schools feel that topper lists serve as inspiration for younger students and help identify high achievers for scholarships or awards.
Balanced Solution?
There are calls from some quarters for a middle path — for instance:
- Sharing toppers' names with schools privately
- Using non-academic parameters for awards
- Highlighting inspiring stories, not just marks
This could allow for positive recognition without fostering a comparison-based environment.
With over 31 lakh students appearing for CBSE Class 10 and 12 exams in 2025, this year’s result will impact countless young lives. The CBSE’s decision not to release the CBSE Topper List 2025 may not please everyone, but the overwhelming support (61%) shows that the move aligns with changing attitudes toward education in India.
The shift emphasizes emotional well-being, holistic growth, and learning without fear — a philosophy that may just reshape how success is defined in our schools.
