Appearing for GATE 2023? Read the article below to know details like how to fill the application form, how to download GATE 2023 admit card, result declaration, and GATE 2023 counselling.
There has been a consistent rising trend amongst PSU’s to recruit students to have a valid score in the exam. From 7 to 10 PSU’s in the beginning, around 70 – 80 PSU’s accept the GATE score as on date. In addition to that, foreign universities in Singapore namely, National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and two universities in Germany – the Technical University of Munich and RWTH Aachen University also consider the GATE percentile valid for admission to their research-based programmes. Other than the PSUs and government institutes, many private engineering colleges and universities also accept the GATE score for admission to their master’s programme.

GATE 2023 Admission Process
Filling the GATE application form is just the first step toward securing admission to an institute of your choice. There are five stages after which candidates would get admission to an institute. Below, we have elaborated on every stage of the GATE 2023 admission process
Filling GATE 2023 application
GATE application is an online process that includes steps such as registration, filling the online application form, uploading the required documents, and payment of application fee. GATE 2023 application process will be available from August 30 to September 30, 2022, without a late fee and till October 7 with a late fee. Take a look at the GATE 2023 registration process below:
Step-1: Register on the GOAPS website
To begin with, aspirants have to register themselves on the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) website by providing a valid email address, mobile number, and password. After completing the registration, candidates’ enrollment ids sent to their registered mail id. Candidates were advised to choose a password that’s hard to guess.
Normalization is basically done for the exams, that are conducted in multiple sessions. It depends on various factors, such as the difficulty levels of the question papers across the multiple sessions into account. Or we can say that the scores obtained by the students are then normalized based on the mean and standard deviation of the raw scores in their respective sessions. This will help to account for any variations in the difficulty level of the different Sets of question papers. It also ensures a fair evaluation of the candidate's performance. The GATE result of a qualified candidate indicates both the GATE score and the marks obtained by the candidate. Check how GATE normalized scores are calculated. Institutions conducting GATE use formulas for converting the marks of candidates into scores. As some papers are conducted in multiple sessions, to arrive at a normalized score for these multiple sessions, a suitable normalization formula is applied. The normalization is done on the basis of the fundamental assumption, which is that "in all multi-session GATE papers, the distribution of abilities of candidates is the same across all the sessions". This assumption is justified since the number of candidates giving multi-session papers in GATE is large. Also, the procedure for allocating sessions to candidates is random. In addition, it is also ensured that for the same multi-session paper, the number of candidates allotted in each session is of the same magnitude. Therefore, the GATE normalized marks calculator is used to calculate the GATE normalized score. Further, read in detail: https://www.shiksha.com/engineering/gate-exam-results.
Step-2: Fill the online application form for GATE 2023
After completing the registration, candidates have to log in again to the official website of GOAPS using their credentials to fill the GATE application form online. After logging in, candidates have to fill in the following details:

Tips and tricks for GATE 2023
- Candidates should try to give a quick reading of the question paper to plan the sequence of the sections and questions they need to attempt.
- It is advisable that candidates must start their exam with the GA and Engineering Maths sections as they are easier, less time taking, and scoring ones.
- Candidates should only answer the questions that they know the exact answers to. It will help them to build a score as they progress.
- After answering every question, students must save them before moving to the next one.
- After answering every question that you know the answers to, move to the ones that you kept for later and start answering them.
- Remember that numerical questions require precision so calculate carefully.
- Don’t waste a lot of time on a single question.
- Since there is negative marking, avoid answering questions or guesswork to the questions you don’t know the answers to.

Participate in GATE 2023 Counselling
The exam conducting body of GATE does not organise any centralized counselling process for MTech admissions. Candidates seeking admission into the IITs, IIITs, NITs, and CFTIs have to participate in different counselling depending on their ranks and choice stream/institute. State and private universities offering MTech admission through GATE have their separate counselling process.
GATE 2023 Counselling schedule will be released in the first week of April. Qualified candidates of the exam have to participate in the counselling procedure conducted by two separate bodies for admission to an institute. A brief about the same is as below:
- COAP (Common Offer Acceptance Portal): COAP conducts counselling for admission to IITs.
- CCMT (Centralised Counselling for MTech): CCMT will conduct counselling for admission to MTech programs offered by NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and CFTIs.
Students should note that state and private universities will conduct their own counselling based on GATE scores.
COAP is not an application portal for MTech admission at IITs. Candidates have to register online for COAP and separately for the respective institute based on their preference.
Documents Required for Counselling
Students will be required to bring the following documents for the document verification process during reporting at RC:
- Provisional seat allotment letter.
- Self-Attested Copy of GATE Score Card (2020 or 2022 or 2023)
- Photo ID proof.
- Original Birth certificate issued by competent authority/Class X (High School) Board Certificate as proof of date of birth.
- Class 12 marks sheet.
- Marks sheet of qualifying examination (all semesters).
- Degree/Provisional Certificate
- Category certificate (if applicable)
- Three Passport size coloured photograph
- Seat acceptance fee proof
- Printout of the Registration form & locked choices
- Migration Certificate
- Transfer Certificate
- Original Conduct Certificate from the Head of the institution last attended
- An original Course completion certificate from the Head of the University/Institute in case result is awaited
- One set of self-attested photocopy of all the original documents
In the past few years, GATE has been providing the best study and career opportunities for technical graduates. Pursuing a Master’s from the best engineering institutes of the country or a job in PSU give students a head start before even entering any industry. The exam provides its qualified candidates with an upper edge over the working professionals who have seen marginal growth even after years of experience in the industry. Every aspirant of GATE needs to work hard and realise their dream through it.

The exam authority will calculate the GATE score by considering the raw marks secured by candidates in the GATE 2025 result. The raw marks, or actual marks, will be allotted to the candidates after evaluating the answers. The GATE score for the multi-session exam will be calculated by converting the raw marks into the normalised marks for that particular subject. The raw marks will be used for calculating the GATE score based on the qualifying marks. The scorecard will be available to qualified candidates only. Candidates should keep the soft copy of the GATE scorecard safe for future use. To check the GATE 2025 result, candidates need their enrollment ID/email ID, and password. The exam conducting authority will prepare the GATE 2025 result on the basis of the performance of the candidates in the exam Check for more detail: https://www.shiksha.com/engineering/gate-exam-results.
