Securing 2500 rank in GATE is considered good. With this rank, you can get admission to new IITs, top NITs and IIITs as well. However, opportunities for PSU jobs can be limited.  GATE AIR of 2500 can roughly correspond a GATE score of 670 to 750.

  • Possible NITs include - NIT Trichy, NIT Suratkal, NIT Calicut
  • New IITs - IIT Bhilai, IIT Patna, IIT Mandi, etc.
Q:   Which NITs accept GATE score 500 for M.Tech admission?
A:

Many new NITs do accept 500 score in GATE for M.Tech admission. Here are some NITs that accept GATE scores between 400 - 500 -

  • National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli

  • Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur

  • National Institute of Technology, Silchar

  • National Institute of Technology, Warangal

  • NIT Mizoram

  • NIT Raipur

  • NIT Agartala

  • NIT Arunachal Pradesh

Q:   Which IITs accept low GATE scores for admission?
A:

Many new IITs do accept low GATE scores for M.Tech admission. Some old IITs also accept low GATE score, depending on category and other factors. Here are some IITs that accept low GATE scores for admission.

  • IIT Bhubaneswar

  • IIT Mandi

  • IIT Bhilai

  • IIT Ropar

  • IIT Jodhpur

These IITs mainly accept GATE scores starting from 330 to 400 (General Category), mainly in Round 4 or 5 of COAP counselling.

What is GATE Safe Score?

The safe score in GATE exam is the minimum mark that is required for admission to your desired college or institute. The GATE safe score must be more than qualifying cutoff mark released by the conducting body. It can vary by paper depending on the competition, branch popularity, cutoff scores, etc.

  • Ideally, for admission to IITs, the safe score can be around 700 to 800 or more. However, for IISc Bangalore admission, the requirement is higher.
  • For top NITs, 700+ is considered as safe score. Again, for different branches, it can be different. Therefore, candidates are advised to research properly and review past college and GATE admission cutoffs to plan for counselling.

The GATE safe score mainly stays higher compared to the qualifying marks/score. Qualifying mark is just the passing mark for GATE. On the other hand, safe score is the mark that makes you eligible for IIT, NITs, or nay other institutes for admission.

Candidates can check GATE 2026 safe score predictions for popular branches below -

Commonly asked questions
Q:   What is the rank for 40 marks in GATE?
A:

40 marks in GATE will approximately give a rank between 2000 to 5000 depending on the paper difficulty level and the number of registered candidates in that particular branch.  Obtaining 40 marks is mainly considered average, opening chances to a few new IITs (less popular branches) and NITs.

However, rank for 40 marks in the Graduate Aptitude in Engineering can give a different rank value for different branches and disciplines. For example, 40 marks in GATE CSE can correspond to 9000 to 10000 rank. On the other hand, 40 marks in GATE ME, can correspond to 6000 - 7100 rank.

Advice to students who secured 40 marks in GATE exam: Better to apply in some state-level colleges or new NITs.

Q:   How can I check my GATE result?
A:

Candidates can check their result at gate2026.iitg.ac.in. To access result link of GATE 2026, enrollment ID and password is required.

Q:   When will IIT Guwahati release GATE 2026 cutoff?

Commonly asked questions
Q:   What is the cutoff score in GATE?
A:

The cutoff score in GATE is the minimum mark required to qualify for the exam. The conducting body releases the qualifying cutoff along with result. It determines, whether a candidate is eligible to participate in the counselling round or not.

The cutoff score in GATE varies every year (category-wise), depending on the number of students registered, difficulty level of the question paper, and previous year's trends. The GATE cutoff score are mainly of two types - admission and qualifying cutoff.

Q:   What is the GATE qualification rate?
A:

GATE qualification is relatively low compared to other postgraduate engineering entrance exams. On average, acceptance rate falls between 15 - 20%.

Last year, as per statistical report, out of 936019 registered candidates, 747319 candidates appeared, and 8761 students qualified.

Overall, general cutoff usually remains around 25 -30 marks out of 100 marks. However, for PSUs 75 to 85 marks are considered as a safe qualifying rate.

Q:   Will GATE 2026 cutoff increase compared to last year, due to high competition?
A:

Yes, it is expected that the GATE 2026 cutoff may increase compared to last year, for the following reasons -

  • Increase in the number of registered applicants.

  • Difficulty level of the question paper

  • Inclination towards newer branches, such as Data Science, Machine Learning, Quantum Tech, etc.

  • Due to the introduction of new and innovative programmes, there can be slight increase in the cutoff trend, especially for CSE, EE, EC, DA, CE and ME

Commonly asked questions
Q:   Is 25 a good score in GATE?
A:

Securing 25 marks in GATE is just reaching the qualifying cutoff. For SC/ST or PwD applicants, 25 marks can be average and safe for securing good GFTIs. However, targeting core branches can be impossible.

In addition, 25 marks in Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering can give different results, based on the paper you have applied for.

For example, 25 marks in GATE CSE or ECE can fetch you a lower rank. While 25 marks in GATE AG or CY might give you good options during counselling (due to low competition).

Q:   How many students registered for GATE 2026 exam?
A:

For now, there are no updates regarding how many candidates have registered and appeared for GATE 2026 exam. IIT Guwahati will release candidate's stats on its official website along with minimum qualifying cutoff marks and results. Meanwhile here is the stats last 5 years of number of candidates registered and appeared in Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering -

Q:   Who was the GATE 2025 EE topper?
A:

Pradeep Chauhan was the GATE 2025 topper in the electrical engineering branch, scoring 81.67 marks out of 100. His GATE score was 1000. In GATE 2025, around 83355 candidates registered for the exam, out of which 67701 candidates appeared for the test.

Q:   Which M.Tech branch has the highest salary through GATE?
A:

MTech in CSE, ECE, ME, CE, DA, and EE usually have the highest salaries in India. Many IITs and IIITs offer placement packages over 50 LPA. However, the average package remains around 20 to 30 LPA.

For subjects like EE, CE, and ME opportunities for high salaries are mainly through PSU jobs, as these are core branches.

Q:   Where can I check my GATE 2026 result?
A:

Candidates can check their GATE 2026 result on the official website. The result was announced on March 19. Credentials needed - enrollment ID and password.
