CAT Percentile Calculation 2026

The CAT percentile is basically the rank of a candidate among all test takers. For CAT percentile calculation, every test taker's raw scores is calculated as per the marking scheme. Once the raw scores are determined, they are normalised to arrive at a scaled CAT score. Then the CAT percentile is calculated from the scaled CAT score.

Calculation of CAT percentile includes three steps. Check below the CAT result calculation:

  1. Each candidate is given marks as per the number of correct and incorrect attempts,
  2. Total score calculated by adding +3 for every correct attempt and deducting -1 for every incorrect attempt.
  3. Thereafter, these section-wise and overall scores (raw scores) are normalised to arrive at a scaled CAT score.
  4. The normalised scores are converted into percentiles which are reported in the CAT scorecards.

CAT Score Normalisation Process

The CAT normalisation process is based on GATE scoring process and the calculations are based on statistic equations. CAT exam is conducted in three slots and the test form of every slot has unique set of questions. Thus, it is quite possible that one CAT exam slot can have tougher questions than another. To ensure that no candidate has any advantage or disadvantage over another due to differences in question paper sets, CAT authority follows a score normalisation process where the marks of every test taker are scaled to bring it on the same plane. Parameters taken into consideration during CAT normalisation process are:

  • Highest score

  • Lowest score

  • Mean score

  • Median score

  • Top 10 percentiles

  • Lowest 10 percentiles

Commonly asked questions
Q:   Are CAT cut offs announced along with the CAT result?
A:

CAT cutoffs are usually not announced with the CAT result. The CAT cutoffs are also not released to the public.

They are published after a few days of the result announcement when the IIMs and other colleges start their shortlisting process. The IIMs opens their shortlisting window based on the CAT cut-offs two to three days after the result announcement. The CAT percentile of candidates shortlisted for the Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD), and Personal Interview (PI) can be considered the cut-off for that IIM. For example, if a candidate with a CAT percentile of 99 belonging to the General category is selected for the WAT/GD-PI of IIM Calcutta, then the CAT cut-off for IIM Calcutta is 99 percentile. Only those candidates who make it to the WAT/GD-PI round of IIMs will get to know the cut-offs.

Q:   I appeared for CAT exam in the second slot. Will my result be declared on the same day as that of the first slot?
A:

Yes, the CAT results for all the exam slots are announced on the same day.

Q:   What is the validity of CAT score?
A:

CAT score is valid for one year at the IIMs and top B-Schools. In some tier 3 and government institutions, CAT score of previous two years are also acceptable. Many B-schools including IIMs have an option of deferment of admission, wherein you can confirm your admission and pay the nominal fee but join the batch in the next year. It is advised that candidates take admission in the same year as their CAT attempt so that they don't have to reappear next year. Given the competition in MBA space, it is difficult to get a good college whether you have a low score or average score. So, incase one is getting a good college, they should take admission and not drop a year to appear for CAT again.

What After CAT Exam Result 2026?

After the declaration of CAT exam result 2026, the shortlisting of candidates for PI round was done for IIMs and non-IIMs in January-February 2026. The PI round included the Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI). Institutes will release the final selection list by May 2026. The basis for PI shortlist was academic record and CAT cutoff.

The IIM admission process consists of three stages. Given below is a brief description of IIM admission process:

  1. Screening of candidates based on CAT score and academic record
  2. Written Ability Test and Personal Interview (WAT/PI) round
  3. Final selection of candidates for admission

The top IIMs conduct admission processes individually, whereas the 9 new/baby IIMs conduct admissions jointly. The newer IIMs select candidates through a Common Admission Process or IIM CAP.

MBA Admission Through CAT: Other Top B-Schools

The admission process of other top B-Schools is same as IIMs, i.e. candidate shortlisting and WAT-PI. Other top MBA colleges too shortlist candidates for the WAT-PI round on the basis of CAT cutoffs. shortlisting. The cutoffs are determined by the institutions individually. For admission to non-IIMs, candidates will be required to fill out the institute application forms. The MBA application window of top B-Schools open from August onwards. Candidates must keep a check on the MBA application deadline of their preferred B-School.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   How are CAT toppers determined?
A:

CAT toppers are determined on the basis of candidate percentiles. Those whose overall percentiles are 100 and 99.99, they are declared the toppers of CAT exam. To calculate CAT percentiles, raw scores of every CAT candidate is normalized on the same scale and the following formula is applied:

P = (R/N) * 100

where,

P= Percentile score

R= Rank of the candidate arrived at on the basis of scaled CAT score or the total number of test takers ranking below a particular candidate.

N= Number of candidates who appeared in CAT exam (all three sessions)

Q:   What if I have a very good CAT score but poor academic record?
A:

If you have a very good CAT score but poor academic record it is quite likely that you may not be shortlisted for top IIMs as the institutes prefer candidates with overall consistency in academics. Class 12 scores holds a lot of importance in shortlisting of candidates for WAT-PI.

Q:   What is the CAT exam cutoff required to get admission to IIM Bangalore?
A:

The CAT cut offs for IIM Bangalore hovers between 97-100 percentile. The qualifying CAT cut off required for being eligible for IIM Bangalore's Written Ability test (What) and Personal Interview PI is 85 percentile for General category students, whereas for SC candidates, it is 70 percentile. For ST candidates, it is 65 percentile and for PwD candidates it is 60 percentile. Given below are the sectional and overall qualifying CAT cut offs for IIM Bangalore.

  • General category: 80 VARC 75 DILR 75 Quantitative Aptitude 85 (Overall)
  • NC-OBC category: 75 VARC 65 DILR 65 Quantitative Aptitude 75 (Overall)
  • EWS category: 70 VARC 65 DILR 65 Quantitative Aptitude 75 (Overall)
  • SC category: 65 VARC 60 DILR 60 Quantitative Aptitude 70 (Overall)
  • ST category: 55 VARC 55 DILR 55 Quantitative Aptitude 65 (Overall)
  • PwD category: 50 VARC 50 DILR 50 Quantitative Aptitude 60 (Overall)
Q:   How important is it to have a good academic profile for IIM admission through CAT?
A:

Having a good academic profile for IIM admission is very critical. The top 6 IIMs lay a lot of emphasis on Class 10 and Class 12 score for selection of candidates for WAT-PI round. The academic profile is evaluated again at the time of preparation of final merit list. It has been seen in the past that some candidates despite having 99+ percentile, were not selected for PI round due to low score in Class 12.

The academic profile is assessed for academic as well as gender diversity. Which means a candidate who studied Arts in Class 12 may be selected for PI with lower marks than a candidate who studied Science in Class 12.

Candidates aiming for IIMs must know that while the importance of academic profile is very important for top IIMs, it is moderately important for rest of the IIMs. For, other top MBA colleges, overall profile matters more than academic score. So, if you do not have superlative scores in Class 10 and 12, build a good profile with work experience and extra curricular activities to increase your chances of selection.

Q:   What are the maximum marks in CAT exam?
A:

Maximum marks in CAT is 204. There are 68 questions each carrying 3 marks. VARC is of 72 marks and DILR and Quants are of 66 marks each.

Q:   Who prepares CAT cutoff?
A:

CAT cut off is prepared by all accepting colleges individually. There is no one authorized body to do so. Even the IIMs determine their admission cut offs separately.

Q:   What is the minimum CAT marks to appear for IIM selection round?
A:

The minimum marks or CAT cut off to appear for IIM selection round is different for every institute. Tier 1 colleges select candidates with CAT score above 95 percentile, Tier 2 colleges select candidates with score between 80-90 percentile and Tier 2 colleges select candidates with score lower than 80 percentile.

IIM Calcutta has only mentioned accepting GMAT score for admission into EMBA courses.

However, CAT is commonly accepted by other similar institutes for both MBA and MBAEx courses. Thus, candidates are advised to ask admission desk for confirmation on this question.

It is not possible to determine a candidate's admission in IIM Calcutta MBA course through CAT score alone. In Stage 1, a score 85% in CAT will be enough for a general category candidate to be selected for PI+WAT admission stage.

Final admission cutoffs are based on many factors other than CAT score.
