CLAT 2027: The Common Law Admission Test, or CLAT, is a national-level entrance exam conducted once a year by the Consortium of National Law Universities (NLU Consortium) for admission to undergraduate (BA LLB and equivalent) and postgraduate (LLM) programmes in participating NLUs, along with several other law schools that accept CLAT scores. As per the official CLAT 2027 exam calendar, the CLAT 2027 exam date is December 6. Candidates should note that there are around 4,000 UG seats offered by NLUs, and to get admission in the NLUs, over 90,000 candidates appear in the CLAT exam. This is the reason that the competition is fierce in CLAT.
The CLAT 2027 notification was released on July 22, 2026 and notified all the dates in its exam notice. CLAT 2027 registrations started on August 3. The last date to apply for the exam is October 31. Recently, the Consortium removed Vellore and Tiruvarur from CLAT 2027. Moreover, the Consortium also released the revised PwD policy applicable in CLAT 2027. All reasonable accommodations at the CLAT exam centre will be provided as per the revised policy only.
This page covers everything you need for CLAT 2027 — exam dates, eligibility, application steps, syllabus, exam pattern, and preparation strategy — updated as fresh notifications come in from the Consortium.
What's New in CLAT 2027 Registration Form
This year, the candidates are not required to provide the order of preference of National Law Universities during the initial registration phase. The candidates can fill in that preference during the counselling registration phase. It will be beneficial for the candidates as the NLUs NIRF Rankings 2026 will be available by that time.

What is CLAT?
CLAT stands for Common Law Admission Test. It's a pen-and-paper (or, in recent years, computer-based, depending on the Consortium's format for that year) entrance exam that determines admission to India's National Law Universities—institutions like NLSIU Bangalore and NALSAR Hyderabad, except NLU Delhi. NLU Delhi conducts its own entrance exam, i.e. All India Law Entrance Test (AILET).
The exam tests five areas: English Language, Current Affairs including General Knowledge, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Techniques. It's designed less around rote memorisation and more around how well you can read a passage under time pressure and reason your way to the right answer — which is exactly why most CLAT toppers say comprehension speed matters more than raw legal knowledge going in. Candidates can see the important highlights below:

It is the most important aspect because if the candidates cannot manage time during the exam, they won't be able to attempt the full paper and in that case, the maximum marks they can score will be reduced. One of the main reasons for wasting time in the CLAT paper is getting stuck on one question for more than the assigned time. The candidates should note that there are 120 questions and each question carries equal marks. The total time assigned is 120 minutes. So in ideal conditions, 1 minute will be available to read, understand, solve and mark the answer for 1 question.
