The Union Public Service Commission will release the Civil Service (IAS) notification soon at upsc.gov.in. The Commission will not mention the service-wise vacancies in the IAS notification. The candidates should note that the number of Indian Administrative Service(IAS) vacancies is expected to remain constant at 180. The number of vacancies for the Indian Police Service (IPS) will be 150. The vacancies to other Central Civil Services varies every year. 

The UPSC IAS notification will be out online only and along with it, the online application form will be activated with it. The Commission will conduct the Civil Service (IAS) exam on May 24, 2026. The IAS 2026 vacancies are expected to be in around 900+. The Commission conduct IAS exam for All India and Central Civil Services which are over 25 in number. The Union Ministry of Personnel releases the post-wise break-up of Civil Service vacancies later.

The Union Public Service Commission will mention the number of vacancies in the notification. The Ministry of Personnel will release the service-wise vacancies on its official website - persmin.gov.in/. The UPSC vacancies 2026 will be released in the notification only.

UPSC CSE Vacancies 2025

The Union Public Service Commission mentioned the number of vacancies in the UPSC IAS notification. The Ministry of Personnel released the tentative breakup of the IAS 2025 vacancies in the following manner:

The UPSC did not mention the post-wise or service-wise vacancies in the official notification. The Commission only mention the number of total vacancies that too is a tentative number. The final number of vacancies in UPSC exam is finalised and released by the Ministry of Personnel on its website.

Q:   How many IAS are selected every year in the UPSC result?

The number of vacancies in the UPSC Civil Service Exam is declining with each passing year but the number of IAS officer recruited every year remain steady at 180. The number of such recruitment is based on the Baswan Committee recommendation which recommended recruiting 180 IAS officers every year to fill the gap between the required numbers and actual recruitment.
Q:   How many vacancies are notified in IAS 2024 exam?
A: 

The Union Public Service Commission notifed 1056 vacancies in the Civil Service Exam (CSE) 2024 notification on February 14, 2024. The Commission notifies the tentative number of Civil Service vacancies for the exam. The Commission can increase or decrease the number of vacancies in the final result. 
In normal circumstances, the Civil Service vacancies increase because the Commission includes the requisition received from the Central Government Ministries till the prelims exam is conducted.

UPSC 2023 Vacancies

The number of UPSC CSE 2023 vacancies were 1,105. The IAS notification 2023 was released as per the schedule given in the UPSC exam calendar. The Commission mentioned the total number of vacancies in the official notification but the UPSC revised the number of IAS vacancies through a notice or addendum. There were 180 vacancies for the IAS officer.

UPSC IAS 2022 Exam Vacancies

The Ministry of Personnel released the service-wise vacancies for the Civil Service Exam 2022. The total number of vacancies were 1,011 after the addition of IRMS. Union Government of India informed the parliament that the number of IPS vacancies were increased to 200.

Q:   Is the UPSC IAS Prelims exam qualifying only?
A: 

The UPSC Civil Service Exam Notification mention that the Civil Service Prelims exam is qualifying only. The UPSC IAS prelims exam is a MCQ based exam conducted offline at the designated exam centre. The marks scored in the UPSC prelims exam is not considered for the final selected process.

The prelims exam was introduced to filtering of candidates and restricting the number of candidates for the main exam.

Ministry of Personnel, which works under the supervision of the Prime Minister of India, is the Cadre controlling authority for the IAS. The IAS officers serve in the states and their salary is provided by the State governments. The state government can suspend the IAS officer on valid grounds but cannot dismiss them from service.
Q:   Which rank is required to get Indian Administrative Service, IAS in the UPSC result?
A: 
Every year, 180 candidates are recruited for the IAS. The candidate from each category is assigned to the IAS according to the rank in their respective category. The General Category candidate under rank 100 can expect to get an IAS. For other categories, it is difficult to ascertain a rank for getting the IAS but for the OBC, if the candidate secures under 150 rank, he or she can get the IAS easily.
Q:   What is registration process for IAS exam?
A: 

The Union Public Service Commission introduced the Universal Registration Number (URN) process for all exams. The URN is a common regisration for all the applications where the candidates fill out registration one time only and these personal details are re-used for the application. 

The URN is common to all exam application. The candidates can take the registration number anytime irrespective of any active application.
