Overview

The West Bengal Civil Service Exam is the most prestigous exam of the WBPSC. The WBCS is not conducted regularly as the Commission is yet to release the exam notification of last year. The West Begal Public Service Commission is expected to release the WBPSC exam calendar 2025-26 to notify the WBCS exam dates and its application process. The candidates are suggested to keep visiting here to know the latest updates about the WBCS 2025 exam.  The WBCS application form will also be released with the official advertisement.

The WBCS is conducted for the Group A, B, C and D. The Commission conduct the exam in offline mode across the state to select the candidates for the WBCS main exam. The Commission has already released a notification mentioning the new WBCS syllabus and exam pattern. The candidates should note that last year, there was no notification of the West Bengal Civil Service (Executive). The WBPSC is expected to conduct the WBCS 2025 exam soon across the state, allowing it to recruit candidates promptly for the state-wide bureaucracy. This will be the first time that the exam will be conducted based on the new WBSC syllabus and exam pattern.

WBCS Syllabus 2025

The West Bengal Public Service Commission released a notice about the new syllabus and exam pattern on its official website. The Commission added on section in the General Studies Paper 1 and changed the weightage to all the other sections as shown in the table below.

What is WBCS?

Four groups of services are combined to form the WBCS. The details of Group A, B, C, and D services will be mentioned in the WBCS notification 2024. WBCS exam is conducted each year to recruit Group-A officers for the West Bengal Provincial Civil Service. The officers recruited through the WBCS exam are:

WBCS Notification 2025

Along with the official notification, the Commission will also release the WBSC online application form for the candidates. The Commission will provide one month to fill out the WBCS online application.

The WBPSC is expected to release the WBCS 2025 applications soon on its portal - psc.wb.gov.in. The Commission will release the apply online link with the notification. The candidates will be required to fill the WBPSC WBCS applications online only.

WBCS Results 2025

The WBPSC will release the WBCS 2025 result within two months from the preliminary exam. The Commission is expected to conduct the WBCS 2025 prelims exam in September/October 2025.

The West Bengal Public Service Commission released the WBCS 2024 prelims result (2023 Session) on July 12, 2024. The Commission selected 4,960 candidates fo the main exam. The Commission releases the WBCS result after each stage of the examination.

WBCS Cut off 2025

The West Bengal Public Service Commission will release the WBPSC WBCS Prelims cutoff with the result. The Commission will mention the WBCS cutoff 2025 for each category separately. 

The West Bengal Public Service Commission released the WBCS 2024 cutoff with the result. The Commission mention the category-wise cutoff in the result pdf itself. The Commission conducted the WBCS prelims exam 2023 on December 16, 2023. The Commission released the WBCS cutoff for the 2023 session with the result pdf. The Commission releases the category-wise cutoff and the number of candidates available under each category for the next level. The previous year's WBCS cut-off shows that the candidates need to score around 65% marks in the WBCS prelims exam to get promoted to the WBCS main exam. The West Bengal Public Service Commission will release the WBCS 2025 exam answer key within a week from the exam date. The Commission release the WBCS answer key pdf online only. WBCS Admit Card 2025

The WBPSC will release the WBCS 2025 admit card around ten days before the exam. The Commission mentions the WBCS exam centres in the admit card and the candidates are suggested to carry two identical stamp-sized photographs as uploaded with the application. The candidates will be required to download their admit card in the manner given below:

WBCS Eligibility Criteria 2025

The West Bengal Public Service Commission will mention the WBCS eligibility criteria in the official notification. The WBCS 2025 eligibility conditions are given below:

Education Qualification Required for WBCS Exam 2025

A degree from a recognised university and the ability to read and write Bengali but it is not required for the candidates to have Nepali as a mother tongue.

WBCS Age Limit 2025

The candidates should note that the lower age limit is 21 years and the upper age limit is 36 years for the WBCS exam. It implies that the candidates born not earlier than January 2, 1989, and not later than January 1, 2004, will be eligible to apply.

Those candidates whose date of birth lies between January 1, 2004, and January 1, 2005 [i.e. whose age is between 20 and 21 years] may apply for Group B posts only. The Commission will accept the date of birth as mentioned in the Madhyamik Certificate only. Madhyamik Certificate means High School Certificate. The candidates can see the WBCS age limit and other essential eligibility criteria.

Age Relaxation in WBCS 2025

There is no age relaxation for the candidate serving in the Government. The above age limit applies to all the candidates except the following:

In the case of Persons with Disabilities (PWD), the upper age limit is relaxable up to 45 years. S.C./S.T./B.C. candidates of other states shall be treated as General category candidates.

Physical Standard Required for WBCS 2025

For West Bengal Police Service (Group ‘B’ Service)

The minimum height requirement is 1.65 metres for male candidates and 1.50 metres for female candidates subject to relaxation in the case of candidates belonging to races such as Gorkhas, Garwalis, Assamese Tribals etc. Candidates intending to be considered for this group must indicate their height in the appropriate column of the application form.

WBCS Selection Process 2025

WBPSC WBCS is a two-stage exam process. As mentioned in the official notification, the Prelims and Main exams are parts of the written stage. The other stage is the interview stage.

Stage 1: The WBCS preliminary is an objective type test consisting of one paper only. The paper will carry 200 marks. The candidates who pass the preliminary exam will be eligible to appear in WBCS main exam. The Preliminary Examination serves as a Screening Test only for the selection of candidates for the Main Examination.

Stage 2: WBCS Main exam consists of six compulsory papers and one optional subject having two papers (only for the candidates appearing for Group A or Group B services).

The six compulsory papers will be objective-type papers and the two optional subject papers will be conventional types. There shall be negative marking in the objective type papers of Prelims as well as Mains exam.

Important Note: The deduction of 10% of full marks will be done if the candidate tries to disclose his/her identity by writing the name or roll number on the answer script of any paper.

Stage 3: The personal interview will follow the written exam. The marks of the personal interview are given below:

Q:   In which mode does the WBCS Prelims exam is conducted?
A: 
The WBCS prelims and Mains exam is conducted in offline mode. The candidates have to mark their answers on the OMR sheet provided by the exam conducting body. The Commission provides the question papers to the candidates so that they can refer to the question and answers in the future. The WBCS prelims exam and most of the papers of WBCS main exam are objective type multiple choice questions. The candidates are required to select the correct answer from the given answer options.
Q:   Is there any negative marking in WBCS main exam?
A: 
Yes, there is a negative marking in the WBCS preliminary and main exams. In the main exam, the quantum of the negative marking is 10% of the marks assigned to the question. In the prelims exam, the negative marking is one by a third. It means that three incorrect questions can eat up the marks secured in the one correct answer and the result of those four questions will be zero. The negative marking makes the exam difficult. Negative marking was introduced to reduce the cases of guesswork in the exam.
