RBI History

In order to address the economic problems that followed the First World War, the Reserve Bank of India was established on 1 April 1935. The 1926 Royal Commission on Indian Currency and Finance, popularly known as the Hilton Young Commission, made recommendations that served as the foundation for the establishment of the bank. Under Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, the country created a centrally planned economic strategy that prioritised the agricultural industry in the 1950s. The administration nationalised commercial banks and created a central bank regulation as a part of the RBI based on the Banking Companies Act of 1949 (later known as the Banking Regulation Act). Additionally, the central bank was mandated to provide loans to assist the economic strategy. The RBI Act was revised by the Indian government in 2016 to create the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). The MPC is composed equally of RBI members (including the RBI governor) and independent members chosen by the government, which reduces the RBI's ability to determine interest rates. However, in the event of a tie, the RBI governor's vote will be taken into consideration.
