GATE 2026 IN, XE, XL, and XH exam live updates: IIT Guwahati will start GATE 2026 exam from TODAY (Feb 7) onwards. The GATE exam dates 2026 are Feb 7, 8, 14, and 15, and will be held in two shifts. Shift 1 timings are 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. IIT Guwahati is conducting the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering exam this year. In the first shift (9:30 am to 12:30 pm), the GATE will be conducted for AG, ES, GG, IN, MA, MN, TF, XE, XL papers. On the other hand, in the second shift (2:30 pm to 5:30 pm), GATE 2026 will be held for AE, BT, CH, CY, GE, PH and XH papers. 

Candidates appearing for GATE, must carry their GATE 2026 hall ticket along with a valid ID proof and other documents (as mentioned by the authorities). Students must follow the GATE exam guidelines 2026 properly to avoid any issues in the scrutiny process.

GATE 2026 Question Paper: Tips and Safe Attempts in GATE

GATE is a computer-based exam which is held for 3 hours straight with no breaks. At the time of attempting questions, students must keep following things in mind -

  • The invigilator allow to login 20 minutes before the exam start date to go through instructions carefully.
  • First, start attempting questions that are easy and you are confident of. Then go for medium and hard-level questions.
  • Keep at least 20 to 30 minutes for reviewing all questions that you’ve attempted.
  • Since GATE 2026 has negative marking, therefore avoid blind guessing.
  • Use rough sheets wisely. Ensure that you write your name and registration number.
  • Make sure to click on the “Submit” button only in the presence of the invigilator.
  • Candidates appearing on upcoming exam dates must revise and solve GATE previous year's question papers with solutions

GATE 2026 Exam Day Guidelines

Here are the list of instructions that must be followed while reporting to the GATE exam centre

  • Candidates must reach the exam centre at least 90 minutes before the exam time.
  • Avoid carrying any electronic gadgets or personal items, such as handbags, mobile phone, bluetooth devices, or any text material to the centre.
  • Candidates must avoid wearing anything with metallic embellishments, as it can distract the checking process. 
  • A scribble pad will be provided inside the exam hall for rough work.
  • GATE calculator online will be available in the candidate’s system.
  • Candidates can carry a pen, pencil, and transparent water bottle to centre.
  • Candidates cannot leave the exam hall before end time.
  • Click on “Submit” button only in presence of invigilator. Once submitted, the responses will be frozen and the exam will end.

    Yes, there is negative marking for GATE 2026 exam. Negative marking implies for MCQs only. 

    • For one mark MCQ- 1/3rd mark will be deducted and for 2 mark MCQ - 2/3rd mark will be deducted.
    • There is no negative marking for MSQs and NATs.
    • Also, no partial marking is offered to MSQs.

    As per official notification, the conducting body do not issue any dress code guidelines for students. However, it is important to wear light and comfortable clothing to avoid unnecessary situations in scrutiny process. Here's what one can avoid -

    A:

    No, candidate who are looking for admission at IISC Bangalore need to have a valid GATE score. However, 70% GATE score + 30% performance in written test (100% GATE based for Aerospace, Chemical, Civil, Materials Engg.) + COAP counselling will be accepted. Apart from this, students might face some problems while downloading the GATE hall ticket 2024. The problem might be due to slow internet connectivity or a heavy load on the server. In such situations, candidates should try downloading the admit card after a short duration. In case any candidate forgets their application ID/Enrollment ID or password, they can reset it. In case a candidate has forgotten their password, they can reset it from the GOAPS portal. 

    Q:   Is CEED or GATE mandatory for PhD admissions at IIT Guwahati?
    A:

    The PhD admissions to the Institute Assistantship courses at IIT Guwahati require candidates to appear for the GATE or CEED. 

    However, PhD admissions to the other categories of PhD courses at IIT Guwahati are not decided on the basis of the aforementioned entrance exams scores.

    A:

    Qualifying mark of GATE exam usually varies every year depending on certain factors. Candidates can refer to expected cutoff based on last year's trends

    IITG GATE 2026 Exam Today Live: Hall Instructions and Guidelines

    Candidates can check GATE 2026 exam hall instructions and guidelines below -

    • Candidates will be permitted to occupy their seats before the start of the exam.
    • Candidates will not be allowed to login 30 minutes after the start of the exam. 
    • However, candidates can login and start reading instructions 20 minutes before the start of the exam. 
    • GATE online calculator will be available on the candidate’s computer.
    • A scribble pad will be provided for doing rough work. Students have to fill their registration number and name before using it. 
    • Candidates can take only one scribble pad at any point of time.
