History for JEE Main Exam
Here is how the JEE Main exam has evolved over several decades:
Before 2002
- Various national, state and private colleges conducted state-level or institutional-level entrance exams for students.
- This led to a lack of uniformity in the admission process and stress among students.
In 2002 - AIEEE was introduced
- CBSE launched a single national-level exam and called it the All India Engineering Entrance Examination.
- It was a single exam that candidates had to write for admission to all the NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, etc.
2013 - AIEEE was replaced by the JEE system
- AIEEE was replaced by JEE Main and JEE Advanced.
- While JEE Main was mandatory for admission to NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, etc, it became a qualifying exam for JEE Advanced, which is a must for IIT admission.
2019 to present - CBSE replaced by NTA as conducting body; Major reforms introduced
- The National Testing Agency (NTA) took charge of JEE Mains.
- Two attempts in JEE Main was implemented.
- The exam was transformed to a computer-based mode from a traditional pen-and-paper-based test.
- The percentile score was introduced.
