Previous year, the exam pattern for both prelims and mains was revised. The changes that were introduced in the IBPS PO exam pattern includes the marking schemes, duration of time and section-wise changes. The IBPS PO Syllabus and exam pattern are the two main components that are very important to understand by the candidates during their preparation journey. IBPS PO exam pattern for prelims, mains and interviews are mentioned separately by the IBPS. The authority changed the exam pattern for both prelims and mains last year. It is important for the candidates to know about the SBI Clerk exam pattern and the changes made previous year to prepare for the exam in the right direction. IBPS PO 2026 Revised Prelims Exam Pattern

IBPS PO prelims exam pattern was revised by the authority in 2025. In the Prelims exam, the marking scheme for the Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning Ability was changed. Prelims exam consists of three sections. The paper will have 100 objective-type multiple-choice questions. Questions in the exam are asked from Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning Ability, and English Language. The total time allotted to candidates to solve questions in IBPS PO prelims exam is 60 minutes. Candidates will get 20 minutes to attempt each section.

  • IBPS PO prelims exam is qualifying in nature

The authority revised the IBPS PO Mains exam pattern in 2025. In total 145 objective questions will be asked for 200 marks and an additional Descriptive Paper worth 25 marks will be asked, making the total 225 marks. Each section is separately timed which is demanding better time management from the candidates.The mains exam consists of both objective and descriptive type tests. The objective test is divided into four sections-Reasoning & Computer Aptitude, General/ Economy/ Banking Awareness, English Language, and Data Analysis & Interpretation. The descriptive section carries questions from English Language (Letter Writing and Essay). The duration of the test is 160 minutes.

Revised Structure of Mains Exam 2026

DI earlier max marks were 60, and now they will be 50. In Reasoning, the number of questions has been reduced from 45 to 40. Time was also reduced from 60 minutes to 50 minutes. In General Awareness, the number of questions was reduced from 40 to 35. Maximum marks increased from 40 to 50. The total number of questions was reduced from 155 to 145. Allotted time was also reduced to 160 minutes.

IBPS PO interview is conducted for candidates who clear the mains exam. The interview carries a total of 100 marks. The minimum qualifying marks in the interview are 40 per cent and 35 per cent for SC/ST/OBC/PWBD candidates. The interview assesses a candidate's intellectual capability, overall personality, and general knowledge. IBPS PO interview usually lasts for 15 to 20 min. However, document and background verification takes a long time.

IBPS PO Negative Marking

There is IBPS PO negative marking in the objective exam. For each wrong answer, one-fourth or 0.25 marks assigned to that question are deducted as IBPS PO negative marking to arrive at the corrected score. There is no IBPS PO negative marking for unattempted questions.

Q:   Does IBPS maintains reserve list for IBPS PO exam?
A: 

A reserve list to the extent of approximately 10 percent of the vacancies under each category may be kept, subject to the availability of candidates. This does not guarantee provisional allotment to/recruitment by the participating banks. In the event of Participating Banks providing further vacancies, provisional allotment may be carried out three to four times for the candidates in the reserve list.

IBPS PO educational qualification is a Degree/Graduation in any discipline from a university recognised by the government. Of India or any equivalent qualification recognised as such by the Central Government. Candidates must possess valid marksheet/degree Certificate that they are graduate on the day they register and indicates the percentage of marks obtained in graduation while registration online. All educational mentioned by the examination authority should be from a university/institution/board recognised by government. Of India/approved by government/approved by government on or before July 21, 2026.  Proper document from Board / University for having declared the result on or before
July 21, 2026 has to be submitted at the time of interview. Candidates who are in the final year of graduation are not eligible to apply for the exam. At the time of interview, candidates are required to submit the educational qualification certificates.

Q:   Is there any probation period for IBPS PO?
A: 

Yes, candidates selected for the post of IBPS PO will be on probation for two years. During probation, the performance of candidates is assessed. They need to undergo training in the various branches. On successful completion of training, candidates are confirmed to the position of Probationary Officers. During the probation period, candidates are trained on various banking services. They are also required to undergo certain banking courses. The basic salary of IBPS PO is INR 48,480. Besides the salary, candidates are also entitled to various perks and benefits.

Q:   Are the IBPS PO prelims and Main exam syllabus the same?

The IBPS PO exam syllabus for preliminary and mains exam is different. The prelim exam tests a candidate's knowledge in English Language, Maths and Reasoning Ability. The revision of IBPS PO salary for bank employees was approved to be effective from November 2017 under the 11th bipartite settlement. The revised salary is valid for a span of five years till 2023 or until revised by the government. Nearly 8.8 Lakhs employees are benefiting from the approval of the 11th bipartite settlement. 

Q:   What is the dearness allowance for IBPS PO?
A: 

IBPS PO Dearness Allowance (DA) is given to the employees is based on the percentage of the basic salary . Currently, it is 19,83 %.  In January 2016, it was around 39.8 per cent of the basic salary, which was reduced to 23.87 per cent as on November 2017. The DA is revised  This every three months based on the All India Consumer Price Index Data published by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, Government of India.
