What is JEE Advanced?

It is an entrance exam for admission to bachelor's programs in science and engineering at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). There are a total of 18,160 undergraduate engineering/science seats across all 23 IITs, with admission through JEE Advanced. A few universities outside India, like the University of Cambridge and the National University of Singapore, also consider JEE Advanced scores for admission to their courses.

JEE Advanced exam is organised by one of the seven zonal IITs under the guidance of the IIT Joint Admission Board (JAB). The exam tests the skills and knowledge of aspirants in Physics, Chemistry and Maths. The JEE Advanced total marks, number of questions, and marking scheme are not fixed and depend on the organising institute.

Only those who qualify JEE Mains and are positioned in the top 2.5 lakh candidates in the order of merit can appear for JEE Advanced. Every year, around 1.8 lakh candidates take the exam, and 18% qualify on average, making it one of the toughest exams in the world.

Indian nationals interested in applying for IIT JEE Advanced have to score marks above the JEE Main 2026 Cutoff percentile. In addition to qualifying NTA JEE cutoff, candidates also need to fulfill JEE Advanced eligibility criteria 2026 of age, number of attempts, and year of passing the class 12 board exams in order to be eligible for appearing in JEE Advanced paper. Foreign nationals are exempted from appearing in NTA JEE Mains, they can apply directly for JEE Adv.

JEE Advanced Admission Process

The admission process for JEE Advanced starts with JEE Main. Check the information below for a better understanding of the admission process:

  1. Register, appear for JEE Mains and achieve a rank among the top 2.5 lakh candidates in the BE/BTech paper
  2. Apply and appear for JEE Advanced exam
  3. Qualify the exam by scoring above the JEE Advanced cutoff score. To know the marks/rank required for admission to top IITs, candidates must check JEE Advanced marks vs rank data.
  4. Register in JoSAA counselling for seat allotment in IITs

Courses offered by IITs after Qualifying JEE Advanced

  • BTech in various Engineering disciplines.
  • BSc programs in Science.
  • BArch in Architecture (Candidates have to qualify additional exam AAT for this)
  • Dual Degree programs like B.Tech-MTech and BS-MS.
  • Integrated MTech and Integrated MSc programs.

Those who qualify in the JEE Advanced exam are offered seats in IITs based on their course preference and JEE Advanced ranks via a common process by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA).

Who can take JEE Advanced?

A candidate is eligible for JEE Advanced if:

  • They are among the top 2,50,000 candidates in JEE Main Paper 1 (BE/BTech).
  • Fulfill creiteria of age limit for JEE Advanced
  • They have not exhausted their two attempts. Candidates having doubt about how many attempts for JEE Advanced must know that they can appear in the exam twice in two consecutive years, from the year of passing class 12.
  • First Class 12 attempt in the current year or the previous year.
  • Not admitted to IIT earlier.

JEE Advanced Organising IITs

The exam is conducted annually by one of the 7 zonal IITs in a round robin rotation pattern. The IITs are arranged in a rational order to conduct the exam, and the rotation is usually from the top to the bottom of the list, starting again at the top of the list, and so on. The exam is guided by the Joint Admission Board (JAB). This rotation system is essentially a way to ensure fair distribution of exam conducting responsibility among the seven zonal IITs.

However, if you have appeared in JEE Advanced in 2024 and have skipped 2025, you cannot appear in 2026 as only consecutive attempts are allowed.

Earlier IIT admissions A candidate should NOT have been admitted to an IIT, irrespective of whether or not the candidate continued in the program OR accepted an IIT seat by reporting “online” / at a “reporting centre” in the past.

Some Doubts Around JEE Advanced 2026 Eligibility and Their Clarification

Among the student community, there is a wave of discussion regarding the JEE Advanced attempt limit, after the 3rd attempt was introduced last year for a brief period of time. Thus, here is answer you should know:

Is there a chance of 3rd attempt in JEE Advanced 2026?

In 2025, IIT Kanpur, which conducted JEE Advanced, announced a three-attempt limit. However, in a few days, the attempt limit was rolled back to two. This has made the JEE Advanced 2026 aspirants curious about the attempt limits for the upcoming JEE Advanced exam after a short-lived three-attempt rule was announced last year. However, as of now, no changes in the JEE Advanced 2026 attempt limit have been announced officially. Stay tuned for any updates with shiksha.com.
