What is JEE Main Exam?

Joint Entrance Examination (Main) is a national-level exam for admission to UG engineering, architecture and planning courses at NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. The exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency. It also acts as a qualifying exam for JEE Advanced for admission to 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and IISc Bangalore.

Additionally, candidates who want to appear for state-level counselling based on JEE Main ranks, such as UPTAC, JAC Delhi, JAC Chandigarh, HSTES, etc, must also appear for JEE Mains.

The JoSAA counselling process is held at the national level and is completely online. The counselling is held in five or six rounds every year, and each round includes seat allotment, seat confirmation by candidates, online reporting at the allotted institute, and payment of fees.

Yes, the candidates who have registered for JoSAA have to re-register for CSAB counselling at csab.nic.in.

The JEE Main 2026 scorecard consists of details of the candidate's normalised percentile score in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, and the aggregate percentile score of all three subjects. No. There is no qualifying percentile in JEE Main. However, the candidates who want to appear in JEE Advanced will have to get a minimum qualifying percentile in JEE Mains. This minimum qualifying percentile is announced with the JEE Main session 2 reult.

The final JEE Mains answer key has been released after reviewing the objections submitted by the candidates. It is used to calculate the result/score of the candidates. The final answer key was not subject to challenge/submission of grievances, and the answers given on the final key were used for preparing the results of JEE Main 2026.

NTA has conducted the JEE Main 2026 January session exam for BE/BTech candidates successfully across multiple cities in India and abroad. The exam was held on January 21, 22, 23, 24 and 28 and on each day, there were 2 shifts. A total of 10 shifts were held for Paper 1. As per the official NTA data, across the 10 shifts,  13,00,368 candidates have appeared out of the 13,50,969 candidates scheduled to appear

Yes, and in fact, in the JEE Main exam, the weightage of class 11 and topics is almost the same. Candidates have to study topics of both classes 11 and 12 with equal importance.

CRL stands for the Common Rank List. NTA releases the cutoff in several categories one of which is CRL. Basically, CRL means unreserved category. Candidates belonging to unreserved category need to have JEE Main cutoff equal to or more than the CRL cutoff. The other categories for which cutoff is released are Gen-EWS, Open-PwD, OBC-NCL, SC and ST.
Q:   What is the minimum qualification needed to appear in the JoSAA counselling?

  • Candidates should have JEE Main and/or JEE Advanced rank.
  • Candidates must have at least 75% aggregate marks in Class 12. The aggregate marks for SC, ST and PwD candidates must be at least 65%.
  • Candidates must be within the category wise top 20 percentile of successful candidates in their respective Class 12 board.

Q:   What is the difficulty level of JEE Main?

JEE Main difficulty level is similar to class 12 board exams. Syllabus of JEE Main is similar to class 11 and 12 syllabus. The questions asked in exam are tricky and need an in-depth understanding of subjects. They need to have conceptual understanding of every topic to score well in exam. Those who study NCERT can get a decent score in JEE Mains.

Q:   What type of questions are asked in JEE Main?
A: 

There are two question types in JEE Main exam. Multiple choice questions and numerical ability questions. In MCQ, every question has 4 options with only 1 correct answer. Select the correct option. In numerical ability question type, no options are there. Solve them and write answer using keyword and mouse.

Q:   What is the exam pattern of JEE Mains?
A: 

JEE Main 2026 exam pattern has been released by the NTA. As per exam pattern, the JEE Main Paper 1 (BE/B.Tech) exam will consist of 75 questions, 25 each from Physics Chemistry and Mathematics. Out of 25 questions, 20 will be MCQs and 5 will be NAV. Students need to answer all 75 questions. JEE Main paper 2A for B.Arch consists of 77 questions of which 25 are from Mathematics, 50 from General Aptitude and 2 from Drawing. What is the 75% Criteria in JEE Main Eligibility 2026?

No minimum marks or subject combination is required in class 12 to be eligible for JEE Main. However, candidates will need a minimum of 75% marks (60% for reserved category candidates) in class 12 in the following subjects for admission to the IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs:

JEE Main 2026 Application Form

The JEE Main 2026 application form was released on the official website - jeemain.nta.nic.in. Instructions to fill out the application form are mentioned below.

  1. Open the JEE Main website.
  2. Click on the JEE Main 2026 registration link.
  3. Provide details like name, parents name, email ID, mobile number, and address.
  4. Registered candidates then need to fill the JEE Main form with details about category, class 10 and 12 education, parents' name and address, paper for which appearing (BTech or BArch/BPlan), exam city preference etc.
  5. Next, candidates have to capture their Live photo.
  6. Then, candidates have to upload scanned image of their photo, signature, class 10 certificate and other certificates as needed.
  7. Pay the fees online using credit card/ debit card/ UPI or internet banking.

Q:   How many times JEE Main is conducted in a year?

National Testing Agency generally conducts the JEE Main exam two times in a year. The first attempt is conducted in January and the second attempt in April. JEE Main 2026 exam dates have been announced by the NTA for both sessions. The first attempt of JEE Main 2026 will be conducted from January 21 to 30 while the second attempt will be conducted from April 2 to 9. Only in the year 2022, NTA conducted JEE Mains in four sessions due to COVID-19. The number of sessions and date for any year is announced by the NTA at the time of release of application form.

Q:   Can I participate in JEE Main counselling next round if I do not accept the seat allotted to me in previous rounds?
A: 

JEE Main counselling and seat allotment has many processes. Once seat is allotted to a candidate, you have option of Accept and Freeze, Accept and Float and Slide. If you are satisfied with allotted seat and select first option, you cannot participate in next round counselling. If you are not satisfied, select second or third option to participate in next round with the current seat.

Q:   Do I need to fill up separate application forms for each session of JEE Main 2026?
A: 

Yes, Candidates who wish to appear in both the sessions of JEE Main 2026 need to fill application form separately for all sessions. However, the JEE Main registration need to be done only once. Candidates who apply for the first session of JEE Mains 2026 can use their session 1 application number and password to login and apply for the second session. During the second session of application filling, candidates only need to enter details of paper for which appearing, exam centre preference and pay the application fees. Other details related to education, address, parents details documents uploaded are taken from the first session application process.

Candidates also have the option of filling the combined application form for both session 1 and 2 during session 2 application process.

Q:   What should I do if I am not able to pay the fee for the JEE Main 2026 application form?

Candidates can face difficulty in payment of application fees due to various reasons like
