JEE Main Counselling 2026 - JoSAA & CSAB

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) oversees the JEE Main counselling, known as JoSAA counselling. This process is centralised and conducted online for candidates who qualify in JEE Main and Advanced, allowing them to take admission to 23 IITs, 31 NITs, the IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs, IISC Bangalore, and 38 other GFTIs.

Eligibility to take part in the JoSAA counselling is restricted to candidates who have qualified in JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Admissions to IITs will rely on JEE Advanced scores, while JEE Main scores are utilised for admissions to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.

JoSAA Counselling Process 2026

The JoSAA 2026 counselling process consists of the following progressive stages:

  1. Registration: Applicants log into the official JoSAA portal utilising their JEE Main credentials and fill the JoSAA counselling application form.
  2. Choice Filling: Candidates select and lock in their preferred combinations of academic programs and institutions.
  3. Seat Allotment: The system assigns seats to individuals based on their exam ranks and locked preferences.
  4. Seat Confirmation: Students secure their allocated seats by choosing one of three specific options:
    • Freeze: The candidate accepts the allotted seat and exits the subsequent counselling rounds.
    • Float: The candidate retains the current seat while remaining eligible for a better seat at any institution in future rounds.
    • Slide: The candidate retains the current seat while remaining eligible for a preferred branch within the same institution during later rounds.

👉 For complete details, download the JoSAA 2026 rule book

CSAB Counselling 2026

Even after participating in JoSAA counselling, the candidates who do not get a seat can participate in the CSAB special counselling round. The CSAB special counselling is held to fill the vacant seats left over after JoSAA. Candidates with lower ranks have high chances of getting a seat via the CSAB counselling, which is also held completely online at csab.nic.in.

Preparation Plan JEE Mains

We have curated some JEE Main 2026 preparation tips on how to prepare for JEE Main exam that are recommended by toppers and experts. Check below:

  1. Understanding pattern of exam in detail
  2. A complete knowledge of syllabus and chapter wise weightage of JEE Main topics.
  3. A schedule that includes time for self study, coaching, and a balance between board exam preparation and JEE preparation.
  4. Collecting and practising previous year JEE Main question papers. Candidates should practice all past 10 year JEE Main question papers.
  5. Taking mock exams daily and analysing your performance.
  6. Revising all important topics, concepts, and formulas regularly.
  7. Analysing mistakes and clearing doubts.
  8. Avoiding distractions, rumours about exam and staying motivated
  9. NCERT books should be a bible for every JEE aspirant. Get hold of all basic concepts using NCERT books. All pages of NCERT book should be familiar to you, and all concepts should be crystal clear.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in JEE Main 2026 Preparation

Check below what NOT to do while preparing for JEE Mains 2026:

  1. Referring to too many books: Do not study from too many books. Complete NCERT (never compromise on NCERT books). Have one reference and one practice paper book for each subject.
  2. Not analysing mock test performance: Many candidates just take mock exams, but they do not analyse mock test results. This is a big mistake that you should avoid. Mock tests can only be helpful if you analyse your performance after each test and keep a log of mistakes.
  3. Not checking chapter-wise weightage from the syllabus: Students often neglect checking high-weightage topics from the syllabus. Prioritising high-weightage topics during preparation is one of the smart ways to prepare for the exam.
  4. Neglecting class 11 topics: It has also been noted that many students do not study class 11 topics with as much dedication as they do for class 12 topics in JEE prep. This is a big blunder. In JEE Main, the weightage of class 11 and class 12 topics is almost equal every year.
  5. Avoiding difficult questions and doubts: Skipping difficult questions is another pattern seen among the JEE aspirants. This should be avoided. Candidates would practice difficult questions and train their minds to be ready for any unexpected difficult questions in the exam.
