Common Mistakes to Avoid in JEE Main 2026 Preparation

Check below what NOT to do while preparing for JEE Mains 2026:

1. Referring to too many books: Do not study from too many books. Complete NCERT (never compromise on NCERT books). Have 1 reference and one practice paper book for each subject.
2. Not analysing mock test performance: Many candidates just take mock exams, but they do not analyse mock test results. This is a big mistake that you should avoid. Mock tests can only be helpful if you analyse your performance after each test and keep a log of mistakes. Check your improvement after each test and analyse every mistake.
3. Not checking chapter-wise weightage from the syllabus: Students often neglect checking high weigtage topics from syllabus. Prioritising high weigtage topics during preparation is one of smart ways to prepare for exam. Therefore, make sure you prioritise topics that carry most weighatge in exam and plan preparation accordingly.
4. Neglecting class 11 topics: It has also been noted that many students do not study class 11 topics with as much dedication as they do for class 12 topics in JEE prep. This is a big blunder. In JEE Main, weightage of class 11 and class 12 topics is almost equal every year. Therefore, students should study both portions with equal weightage.
5. Avoiding difficult questions and doubts: Skipping difficult questions is another pattern seen among the JEE aspirants. This should be avoided. JEE Main 2026 Final Answer Key

The final JEE Mains answer key, released after reviewing the objections submitted by the candidates, will be used to calculate the result/score of the candidates. The final answer key is not subject to the candidates' challenge/submission of grievances. After the NTA JEE Main 2026 session 2 result is released, which will have the All India Rank of the candidates and the final percentile score based on comparison of both (January and April) sessions, candidates have two pathways to take:

1. Those candidates who will qualify for JEE Advanced 2026 have to register for JEE Advanced 2026 at jeeadv.ac.in.
2. Those candidates who do not qualify for JEE Advanced can apply for JoSAA counselling that will be held in June for admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
3. Candidates can also apply for the state-level counselling process via JEE Main scores, like:

NTA releases the JEE Mains cutoff along with the session 2 result in April. JEE Main cutoff is the minimum percentile score that candidates have to score to qualify for appearing in JEE Advanced.

JEE Main cutoff is different for various categories. Candidates must note that there are NO minimum marks or cutoffs that students need to obtain to pass JEE Main exam. The score that candidates get in JEE Main decides All India Rank, and admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs is purely based on All India Rank. JEE Main cutoff is only for appearing in JEE Advanced.

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) conducts JEE Main counselling, called the JoSAA counselling. It is an online and centralised counselling process for JEE Main and Advanced qualified candidates for admission to 23 IITs, 31 NITs, the IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs, and 38 other GFTIs.

Only JEE Main and JEE Advanced qualified candidates are eligible to participate in the JoSAA counselling. For participating in IITs admission, the JEE Advanced scores will be used, whereas JEE Main scores are used for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.

To participate in the counselling, candidates have to register online at the JoSAA portal and fill their choices of preferred colleges and courses for the allotment of seats.

JoSAA Counselling Process

The JoSAA counselling process is made up of the following stages:

1. Registration: Candidates have to register on the JoSAA website using JEE Main credentials.
2. Choice Filling: Choice filling is to be done after completing the registration process. In this stage, candidates have to select courses and institutes of their choice.
3. Seat Allotment: The JoSAA authority allots seats to candidates based on rank and choices filled by them.
4. Seat Confirmation by Candidates/ Online Fee Payment/Institute Reporting: After seat allocation, candidates will have to confirm their admission by selecting the freeze/float option. If candidates select Freeze/Float option, they have to submit the college fees online, upload their documents and report to the allotted institute. In case candidates choose the slide option, they will proceed to the next round.

4. Registered candidates then need to fill the JEE Main application form 2026 with details about category, class 10 and 12 education, parents name and address, paper for which appearing (BTech or BArch/BPlan), exam city preference etc.
5. Next, candidates have to capture their Live photo.

The form correction facility opens online only on the official website - jeemain.nta.nic.in. NTA will not accept any correction request in the JEE Main form via email or any other means.
