JEE Advanced 2025: How to Estimate Rank Using Answer Key?

JEE Advanced 2025: Candidates who appeared for the exam can estimate their probable EE Advanced 2025 rank by using the official answer key to calculate their expected scores. Check details here
JEE Advanced 2025: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur conducted the JEE Advanced on May 18 and released the provisional answer key on May 26, 2025. While the official results are still a few days away, candidates can get an idea of their performance and even estimate their potential JEE Advanced 2025 rank by analysing the answer key. This also allows candidates to have a proximate idea of their JEE Advanced rank as well as the college they could get into for their desired branch.
How to Estimate Rank Using JEE Advanced 2025 Answer Key?
Candidates can check the pointers mentioned below to know how to estimate their rank using the JEE Advanced answer key 2025:
Calculate Raw Score
Before estimating JEE Advanced rank, they need to know their raw score. For that, they can follow these steps:
- Download the official JEE Advanced 2025 answer key
- Compare JEE Advanced responses (as per the response sheet) with the correct answers.
- Add or subtract marks according to the JEE Advanced marking scheme:
- Correct answer: +3 or +4 marks (depending on the section)
- Incorrect answer: −1 mark (if negative marking applies)
- Unattempted: 0 marks
Make sure they tally scores for both JEE Advanced Paper 1 and Paper 2, and sum them to get the total marks.
Understand Rank vs Score Trends
Once candidates have their estimated score, refer to previous years’ JEE Advanced score vs rank data. Here's a quick reference from JEE Advanced 2024 for context:
Marks out of 360 ( for CRL) | Ranks |
---|---|
301+ | 1 to 100 |
300 to 258 | 101 to 501 |

230 to 219 | 1101 to 1501 |
216 to 207 | 1601 to 2001 |
2015 to 199 | 2101 to 2501 |
197 to 186 | 2601 to 3501 |
185 to 173 | 3601 to 4901 |
172 to 166 | 5001 to 5901 |
165 to 160 | 6001 to 6901 |
159 to 150 | 7001 to 8901 |
149 to 139 | 9001 to 11901 |
138 to 133 | 12001 to 13901 |
132 to 123 | 14001 to 17901 |
123 to 113 | 18001 to 22901 |
113 to 119 | 23001 to 25946 |
Factor in Objections and JEE Advanced 2025 Final Key
Keep in mind that the current JEE Advanced answer key is provisional. If candidates have raised valid objections, some answers may be revised before the final JEE Advanced answer key is released. This could affect the score slightly, either upward or downward. The objection window is open until today: May 27, 2025.
Consider Normalization and Tie-Breaking
The final JEE Advanced rank also depends on:
- Aggregate marks (sum of Paper 1 and 2)
- Subject-wise marks in case of ties (higher math score, followed by physics and chemistry)
- Total number of candidates
- Difficulty level of the paper
JoSAA Counselling 2025
Once candidates have an estimated rank, they should begin researching IITs and branches that typically admit candidates within their range. The JoSAA 2025 counselling is expected to begin shortly after JEE Advanced 2025 results are declared. While only the official JEE Advanced result 2025 will confirm the rank, estimating it using the answer key can help reduce uncertainty and enable better decision-making.
