On March 10, during a Lok Sabha session, Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar addressed inquiries from several ministers regarding the expansion of seat capacity in the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). In his written response, he noted that student enrollment across these institutions has surged by an impressive 100% over the past decade, escalating from 65,000 to 1,35,000. The inquiry specifically highlighted whether the government had indeed increased IIT seat allocations by more than 100%, as well as the necessary infrastructure enhancements, particularly at IIT Patna and IIT Delhi, to facilitate the admission of an additional 6,500 students.

In Budget 2025-26, it has been announced to create additional infrastructure in the five IITs started after 2014 to facilitate education for 6,500 more students. It was inter-alia also announced to expand hostel and other infrastructure capacity at IIT Patna.

The Minister emphasised that IIT Hyderabad (Telangana), IIT Kanpur, IIT-BHU Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), IIT Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh), and IIT Patna (Bihar) are now fully operational from their permanent campuses. For the financial year 2024-25, a substantial allocation of over Rs 1,830 crore has been designated for the developmental initiatives of these five institutes. This funding is intended to enhance infrastructure and academic capabilities as they continue to advance their research and educational mandates.

In 2024, the total number of seats available in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) reached 17760, inclusive of Supernumerary seats. The admissions process for IITs is determined by the results of the JEE Advanced examination. In the previous year, 180,200 candidates attempted the IIT JEE Advanced exam, with 48,248 successfully qualifying. From this pool, 17,695 candidates were granted seats. The JEE Advanced 2025 is scheduled for May 18, with the registration period commencing on April 23.

According to the JoSAA seat matrix, the total seats in IITs are 17760, while the number of seats in NITs and IIITs is 24229 and 8546, respectively. According to the official data, this year 355 seats were increased in IIT, including 20 in IIT Bhubaneswar, 12 in IIT Bombay, 30 in Kharagpur, 84 in Patna, 30 in Gandhinagar, 10 in Guwahati, 40 in Bhilai, 10 in Tirupati, and 75 in Dharwad. In 2023, the IIT seat count was 17385.
