JoSAA 2026 Seat Allotment Confirmation - âFreezeâ, âSlideâ or âFloatâ
The candidate needs to accept the seat allocated in JoSAA counselling and then opt for any one of the options âFreezeâ, âSlideâ or âFloatâ. We have explained the meaning of float, slide and freeze below:
| Freeze | This means candidate is happy with the allotment and does not want any other seat. They have to select this option and complete the fee payment details. These candidates complete the counselling and cannot participate in upcoming counselling rounds. |
| Float | This option means, candidate can participate in the upcoming counselling rounds for allotment in a better college and course from their preference list. |
| Slide | Selecting this option means candidates want to be considered for better course preference from their choice list, but in the same institution allotted. |
Important:
- Slide and float options will be available to only those candidates who are NOT offered admission to their first choice in their choice list.
- Slide and float options are NOT available in the last round of JoSAA
- Â Candidate can change from float to slide/freeze and slide to freeze in the online portal during all rounds of Seat Allocation EXCEPT the last round.
- If a candidate opts for Freeze against a seat, the option cannot be changed in the subsequent rounds under any circumstances.
Commonly asked questions
NO. Once you are allocated a seat of higher preference based on your float/slide option, your accepted seat from the earlier JoSAA counselling round will be automatically cancelled and you cannot get the previously allotted seat.
No you won't be able to edit your choice list after the deadline for JoSAA choice filling. You cannot change the order of your choices. Even adding or deleting any more course won't be possible after the deadline date for choice filling.

JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) has been set up by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) to manage and regulate joint seat allocation for admissions to over 100 institutes including IITs, NITs, IIITs, and Other-Government Funded Technical Institutes (Other-GFTIs). Admissions to all these institutes will be done through a single platform. The idea behind introducing a single counselling platform was to reduce thousands of seats going vacant in engineering colleges across the country. The Joint seat allocation process was introduced to make the whole process of admissions smoother, effective, efficient, transparent and a lot faster. Candidates who qualify for the JEE Main or JEE Advanced must register for JoSAA 2025 to participate in the counselling and admission process for various renowned engineering institutes across India. The admission process for admissions in 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 25 IIITs, and 28 Other-Government Funded Technical Institutes (Other-GFTIs) is managed by The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). Candidates will be allotted seats in various rounds of JoSAA counselling. The seat allotment through JoSAA will be based on the merit of candidates and their preference for courses and colleges.
- Candidates should have JEE Main and/or JEE Advanced rank.
- Candidates must have at least 75% aggregate marks in Class 12. The aggregate marks for SC, ST and PwD candidates must be at least 65%.
- Candidates must be within the category wise top 20 percentile of successful candidates in their respective Class 12 board.
SAF is Seat Acceptance Fees (SAF) on JoSAA. Upon receiving a seat for the first time, candidates must remit the seat acceptance fee in the respective round. Failure to pay the seat acceptance fee constitutes a refusal of the offered or allocated seat and renders the candidate ineligible for further participation in subsequent rounds of the seat allocation process.
For payment of seat acceptance fee, candidates should either use Net Banking or Debit card or UPI or Credit card facilities available on JoSAA portal or use e-challan of State Bank of India downloaded from the JoSAA portal.
No. Preferences can only be changed once during the JoSAA choice filling window.
The courses offered by the 23 IITs, 31 NITs, IIEST Shibpur, IISC Bangalore, 26 IIITs and 40 Other-Government Funded Technical Institutes (Other-GFTIs) via the JoSAA counselling includes:
The official website for JoSAA is josaa.nic.in. All official details regarding the Joint Seat Allocation Authority counselling are updated on the website. The JoSAA schedule, the cutoffs, important notice, eligibility, business rules and all other details are updated on the official website. Candidates must keep track of the official website for all important information and updates on JoSAA counselling.
