What is JEE Main Exam?
JEE Main - Joint Entrance Examination (Main) is a national-level exam conducted twice a year by the National Testing Agency.
Purpose of the exam
- The purpose of the exam is to shortlist candidates for admission to UG engineering, architecture and planning courses at NITs, IIITs and GFTIs.
- It is also the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced for admission to 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and IISc Bangalore.
- Apart from these institutes, JEE Mains scores are also accepted for admissions in various state-level counselling like UPTAC, JAC Delhi, JAC Chandigarh, HSTES, etc.
Who should appear for JEE Mains?
- Candidaes who want to pursue an engineering course after class 12 from premier colleges of the nation must appear for the JEE Main exam.

JEE Main Counselling 2026 - JoSAA & CSAB
The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) oversees the JEE Main counselling, known as JoSAA counselling. This process is centralised and conducted online for candidates who qualify in JEE Main and Advanced, allowing them to take admission to 23 IITs, 31 NITs, the IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs, IISC Bangalore, and 38 other GFTIs.
Eligibility to take part in the JoSAA counselling is restricted to candidates who have qualified in JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Admissions to IITs will rely on JEE Advanced scores, while JEE Main scores are utilised for admissions to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
JoSAA Counselling Process 2026
The JoSAA 2026 counselling process consists of the following progressive stages:
- Registration: Applicants log into the official JoSAA portal utilising their JEE Main credentials and fill the JoSAA counselling application form.
- Choice Filling: Candidates select and lock in their preferred combinations of academic programs and institutions.
- Seat Allotment: The system assigns seats to individuals based on their exam ranks and locked preferences.
- Seat Confirmation: Students secure their allocated seats by choosing one of three specific options:
- Freeze: The candidate accepts the allotted seat and exits the subsequent counselling rounds.
- Float: The candidate retains the current seat while remaining eligible for a better seat at any institution in future rounds.
- Slide: The candidate retains the current seat while remaining eligible for a preferred branch within the same institution during later rounds.

CSAB Counselling 2026
Even after participating in JoSAA counselling, the candidates who do not get a seat can participate in the CSAB special counselling round. The CSAB special counselling is held to fill the vacant seats left over after JoSAA. Candidates with lower ranks have high chances of getting a seat via the CSAB counselling, which is also held completely online at csab.nic.in.

No. There is no qualifying percentile in JEE Main. However, the candidates who want to appear in JEE Advanced will have to get a minimum qualifying percentile in JEE Mains. This minimum qualifying percentile is announced with the JEE Main session 2 reult.

JEE Main difficulty level is similar to class 12 board exams. Syllabus of JEE Main is similar to class 11 and 12 syllabus. The questions asked in exam are tricky and need an in-depth understanding of subjects. They need to have conceptual understanding of every topic to score well in exam. There are two question types in JEE Main exam. Multiple choice questions and numerical ability questions. In MCQ, every question has 4 options with only 1 correct answer. Select the correct option. In numerical ability question type, no options are there. Solve them and write answer using keyword and mouse.
Students who are preparing for JEE Main exam are advised to first cover the entire JEE Main syllabus. Covering only the high weightage chapters would decrease their chances of getting full/high score in JEE Main exam. JEE Main 2026 exam pattern has been released by the NTA. As per exam pattern, the JEE Main Paper 1 (BE/B.Tech) exam will consist of 75 questions, 25 each from Physics Chemistry and Mathematics. Out of 25 questions, 20 will be MCQs and 5 will be NAV. Students need to answer all 75 questions. JEE Main paper 2A for B.Arch consists of 77 questions of which 25 are from Mathematics, 50 from General Aptitude and 2 from Drawing. In Paper 2B for BPlan total questions are 100 of which 25 are from Mathematics, 50 from General Aptitude and 25 from Planning.
The question paper will have no internal choices within questions and total duration of exam is 3 hours.

Yes, NTA reopened the JEE Main 2026 session 2 registration window from March 12 to 13.
Candidates can choose a maximum of 4 exam cities in the JEE Main application form from the choices available based on their present address.
If candidates are facing issue in live photo capture, it can be due to mismatch from photo uploaded in Aadhar. For this, they need to visit the Aadhar update centre and get their current photo updated in the Aadhaar database.
The issue can also be due to any servor error/slow internet connectivity for which candidates can try uploading it after some time. Also, there can be a case of laptop/computer not supporting the webcame, for this, candidates can upload the photo using QR code provided in the application process.
No, candidates can not upload black & white photograph in JEE Mains application form.

JEE Main counselling and seat allotment has many processes. Once seat is allotted to a candidate, you have option of Accept and Freeze, Accept and Float and Slide. If you are satisfied with allotted seat and select first option, you cannot participate in next round counselling. If you are not satisfied, select second or third option to participate in next round with the current seat.
Candidates can face difficulty in payment of application fees due to various reasons like
- Slower internet connection while paying fees
- Slow bank server
- Insufficient balance in bank
In case any candiate faces issues while trying to pay JEE Main application fees, they should try paying the fees after some time. Candidates can also try logging out the application form process once and then try paying application fee again after logging in. If the situation still persists, students can contact NTA JEE Main helpline number.
JEE Main 2026 shift 1 exam reporting time is 7 am. The exam centre gates will close at 8:30 am. No candidate will be allowed after this deadline.
When two candidates score same marks in JEE Main, the NTA resolves tie by giving weightage to candidates haveing the highest marks in Maths>Physics>Chemistry. In case ties still persist, the weightage will be given to candidates with less incorrect questions in subjects in the same order.

To make corrections in the JEE Main application form, candidates have login to their accounts on the JEE Main official website using their application number and password.
Objections raising fee in JEE Main answer key is INR 200 per question. You can pay it online using internet banking or credit/debit card. The exact fees to be paid depends on total questions selected for grievance.
- Candidates should have JEE Main and/or JEE Advanced rank.
- Candidates must have at least 75% aggregate marks in Class 12. The aggregate marks for SC, ST and PwD candidates must be at least 65%.
- Candidates must be within the category wise top 20 percentile of successful candidates in their respective Class 12 board.

No, candidates are not required to send the prinout of JEE Main application form 2026 to the NTA office. Candidates have to fill and submit the application form online only. However, it is advised that candidates download, take a printout of their filled application form and keept it safe until the completion of admission process. JEE Main 2026 application form copy might be required at the time of counselling/admission process in the institute.
Yes, Candidates who wish to appear in both the sessions of JEE Main 2026 need to fill application form separately for all sessions. However, the JEE Main registration need to be done only once. Candidates who apply for the first session of JEE Mains 2026 can use their session 1 application number and password to login and apply for the second session. During the second session of application filling, candidates only need to enter details of paper for which appearing, exam centre preference and pay the application fees. Other details related to education, address, parents details documents uploaded are taken from the first session application process.
Candidates also have the option of filling the combined application form for both session 1 and 2 during session 2 application process.

1) Fill JoSSA — try for NIT Manipur/Nagaland/Mizoram in Civil or Mechanical
2) Participate in CSAB — extra chance

No, interview round for BSc admission at BIT Mesra is part of BITCHEM which is not required for candidates who are open to pusuing BSc at Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra. Candidates who apply through JEE Main will not be required to appear in BITCHEM.

Candidates wishing to take admission in BTech at Ramaiah Institute of Science and Management have to appear in JEE Main, JEE Advanced, CUET-UG, SAT, KCET, COMEDK. So, yes even if you have not appeared in JEE, you can produce score card of any of the above mentioned exams.

The East Point Group of Institutions accepts many exams for the BE course. The accepted exams are JEE Main, COMEDK, and KCET. Students can appear in any of these exams to get admission at EPGI. Students need to fulfil the eligibility criteria as well.
