What is JEE Main Exam?
JEE Main - Joint Entrance Examination (Main) is a national-level exam conducted twice a year by the National Testing Agency.
Purpose of the exam
- The purpose of the exam is to shortlist candidates for admission to UG engineering, architecture and planning courses at NITs, IIITs and GFTIs.
- It is also the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced for admission to 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and IISc Bangalore.
- Apart from these institutes, JEE Mains scores are also accepted for admissions in various state-level counselling like UPTAC, JAC Delhi, JAC Chandigarh, HSTES, etc.
Who should appear for JEE Mains?
- Candidaes who want to pursue an engineering course after class 12 from premier colleges of the nation must appear for the JEE Main exam.
- Candidates aiming for admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, IISc Bangalore, and IIEST Shibpur have to appear and get a rank in this exam.
- Candidaes who want to appear for state-level counselling based on JEE Main ranks must take the exam mandatorily.

JEE Main Counselling 2026 - JoSAA & CSAB
The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) oversees the JEE Main counselling, known as JoSAA counselling. This process is centralised and conducted online for candidates who qualify in JEE Main and Advanced, allowing them to take admission to 23 IITs, 31 NITs, the IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs, IISC Bangalore, and 38 other GFTIs.
Eligibility to take part in the JoSAA counselling is restricted to candidates who have qualified in JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Admissions to IITs will rely on JEE Advanced scores, while JEE Main scores are utilised for admissions to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
JoSAA Counselling Process 2026
The JoSAA 2026 counselling process consists of the following progressive stages:
- Registration: Applicants log into the official JoSAA portal utilising their JEE Main credentials and fill the JoSAA counselling application form.
- Choice Filling: Candidates select and lock in their preferred combinations of academic programs and institutions.
- Seat Allotment: The system assigns seats to individuals based on their exam ranks and locked preferences.
- Seat Confirmation: Students secure their allocated seats by choosing one of three specific options:
- Freeze: The candidate accepts the allotted seat and exits the subsequent counselling rounds.
- Float: The candidate retains the current seat while remaining eligible for a better seat at any institution in future rounds.
- Slide: The candidate retains the current seat while remaining eligible for a preferred branch within the same institution during later rounds.

CSAB Counselling 2026
Even after participating in JoSAA counselling, the candidates who do not get a seat can participate in the CSAB special counselling round. The CSAB special counselling is held to fill the vacant seats left over after JoSAA. Candidates with lower ranks have high chances of getting a seat via the CSAB counselling, which is also held completely online at csab.nic.in.

What is the 75% Criteria in JEE Main Eligibility 2026?
No minimum marks or subject combination is required in class 12 to be eligible for JEE Main, but candidates will need a minimum of 75% marks (60% for reserved category candidates) in class 12 in the following subjects for admission to the IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs:

JEE Main 2026 Registrations
The JEE Main 2026 April application form is released on the official website - jeemain.nta.nic.in.
The instructions to fill out the application form are mentioned below.
- Open the JEE Main website.
- Click on the JEE Main 2026 Registration Session 2 link.
- Provide details like name, parents name, email ID, mobile number, and address.
- Registered candidates then need to fill the JEE Main application form 2026 with details about category, class 10 and 12 education, parents name and address, paper for which appearing (BTech or BArch/BPlan), exam city preference etc.
- Next, candidates have to capture their Live photo.
- Then, candidates have to upload scanned image of their photo, signature, class 10 certificate. Students of OBC-NCL/SC/ST/Gen-EWS/PwD/PwBD categories also need to upload their certificates.

JEE Main counselling and seat allotment has many processes. Once seat is allotted to a candidate, you have option of Accept and Freeze, Accept and Float and Slide. If you are satisfied with allotted seat and select first option, you cannot participate in next round counselling. If you are not satisfied, select second or third option to participate in next round with the current seat.
Candidates can face difficulty in payment of application fees due to various reasons like

- Insufficient balance in bank
In case any candiate faces issues while trying to pay JEE Main application fees, they should try paying the fees after some time. Candidates can also try logging out the application form process once and then try paying application fee again after logging in. JEE Main 2026 shift 1 exam reporting time is 7 am. The exam centre gates will close at 8:30 am. No candidate will be allowed after this deadline.
When two candidates score same marks in JEE Main, the NTA resolves tie by giving weightage to candidates haveing the highest marks in Maths>Physics>Chemistry. In case ties still persist, the weightage will be given to candidates with less incorrect questions in subjects in the same order.
