JEE Main 2027: The National Testing Agency (NTA) will hold the JEE Main 2027 exam in two sessions - January and April. JEE Main 2027 notification is expected in October 2026, and Session 1 is expected in the third week of January 2027. Session 2 will be held in the first week of April 2027.
Those candidates passing the Class 12 exam in 2025, 2026, or 2027 can apply for JEE Main exam 2027.
The scores of NTA JEE Mains will be used for admission to NITs/IIITs/GFTIs. Additionally, the top 2.5 lakh rank holders will be eligible for JEE Advanced 2027 for IIT admissions. Around 16 lakh candidates register for the exam each year, and of them, approximately 15 lakh appear.

What is JEE Main Exam?
JEE Main is a national-level engineering entrance exam conducted for Class 12 passed/appearing students for UG engineering admissions in courses like BTech/BE, BArch and BPlanning.
To reduce stress for candidates taking multiple entrance tests, India created the unified AIEEE in 2002. It became known as JEE Main in 2013, serving as the admission test for NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, as well as a qualifier for JEE Advanced conducted by CBSE. Since 2019, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has conducted it as a computer-based test held in multiple sessions, using percentile scoring.
JEE Main exam serves two purposes:

JEE Main 2027 vs JEE Advanced 2027: How the Two Exams Connect
JEE Main and JEE Advanced are two different exams with a whole different purpose. Every JEE Advanced candidate must first clear the JEE Main qualifying cutoff - only the top 2.5 lakh JEE Main rank holders (across all categories) become eligible to register for JEE Advanced.
The two exams are typically 8-10 weeks apart:

JEE Advanced is usually held in the fourth or fifth week of May.

Registration for JEE Advanced opens right after the JEE Main Session 2 results, so candidates aiming for IITs should have their JEE Advanced specific revision plan ready before the JEE Main Session 2 results are out, not after.
- The syllabus of both exams is different and not the same. Candidates should review the syllabus of JEE Advanced and Mains separately.
- The exam pattern of JEE Advanced is more challenging than JEE Main. Students should study both patterns carefully.
JEE Main Eligibility Criteria 2027
NTA has set some eligibility criteria for the candidates. These include the Class 12 passing year, age limit, attempt limits, subjects studied in Class 12 and minimum marks required for admission.
Age Limit Criteria
There is no age limit to apply for JEE Main 2027. The National Testing Agency (NTA) does not impose an age limit for appearing in JEE Main exam. This means that a candidate does not automatically become ineligible for JEE Main just because they are older than the typical Class 12 candidate.

Attempt Limit to Appear for JEE Main 2027
There is an attempt limit in JEE Main. A candidate can appear for the exam three times in three consecutive years from the year of passing Class 12. Since JEE Main is conducted in two sessions every year (January and April), candidates can appear in both sessions during each eligible year. This means a student gets up to six attempts over three years as per the JEE Mains eligibility.
Subjects Studied in Class 12
To appear in JEE Main, there are no subject combination criteria in Class 12. However, institutes like IITs/NITs/IIITs/GFTIs impose a compulsory subject combination requirement in Class 12 to be eligible for admission.

JEE Main 2027 Minimum Marks Requirements (75% Criteria Explained)
There are no minimum marks needed in Class 12 to apply for JEE Mains 2027. However, minimum marks will be needed for admission to IITs/NITs/IIITs/GFTIs.

Admission to NITs, IIITs and CFTIs through the relevant JoSAA/CSAB is subject to the candidate having at least 75% marks in Class 12 or being in the top 20 percentile of their respective board.

There is no age limit to apply for the JEE Mains exam. Candidates should check the other eligibility criteria before they start the application process.
On the JEE Main result, candidates can check if they have qualified for the JEE Advanced exam.
As per the JEE Main information brochure, both UDID card and PwD/PwBD certificates will be accepted. Candidates who do not have UDID card can upload their PwD/PwBD certificate at the time of filling application form. They can get the UDID certificate before the counselling admission process.

Home State vs Other State Quota for NIT Admissions
Home State (HS) Quota and Other State (OS) Quota are seat reservation categories used during engineering college admissions in India, like in the NITs via JEE Mains.

JEE Main difficulty level is similar to class 12 board exams. Syllabus of JEE Main is similar to class 11 and 12 syllabus. The questions asked in exam are tricky and need an in-depth understanding of subjects. They need to have conceptual understanding of every topic to score well in exam. There are two question types in JEE Main exam. Multiple choice questions and numerical ability questions. In MCQ, every question has 4 options with only 1 correct answer. Select the correct option. JEE Main has 75 questions (20 MCQs + 5 Numerical per subject) across Physics, Chemistry, Math. 3-hour CBT awards +4 for correct, -1 for incorrect answers, totalling 300 marks.

Covering only the high weightage chapters would decrease their chances of getting full/high score in JEE Main exam. JEE Main counselling and seat allotment has many processes. Once seat is allotted to a candidate, you have option of Accept and Freeze, Accept and Float and Slide. If you are satisfied with allotted seat and select first option, you cannot participate in next round counselling. If you are not satisfied, select second or third option to participate in next round with the current seat.
Candidates can face difficulty in payment of application fees due to various reasons like

In case any candiate faces issues while trying to pay JEE Main application fees, they should try paying the fees after some time. JEE Main 2027 shift 1 exam reporting time is 7 am. The exam centre gates will close at 8:30 am. No candidate will be allowed after this deadline.
