The Mechanical Engineering admission in India involves both Class 12 merit and entrance exam scores. Mechanical Engineering courses after 12th are intended to teach students about the planning, design, building, and testing of various mechanical equipment, systems, and machinery. There are various Mechanical Engineering specializations for students to pursue, including Robotics Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, and Nanotechnology.

The usual Mechanical Engineering admission eligibility criteria for UG courses require students to complete Class 12 in the Science stream with a minimum of 50 to 60 percent marks in PCM subjects. For PG courses, students must hold a bachelor's degree in the same or a related field with at least 55 percent marks. Some of the prominent Mechanical Engineering entrance exams in India for admission to the B Tech Mechanical Engineering course include JEE Main and JEE Advanced, TNEA Counselling, MHT CET, KCET, AP EAMCET, and COMEDK UGET. Further, most admissions to MTech Mechanical Engineering take place on the basis of the GATE scores.

There are more than 6,400 full-time Mechanical Engineering colleges in India, are IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, VIT Vellore, Delhi Technological University (DTU), BITS Pilani, NIT Surathkal, NIT Trichy, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, and Jadavpur University. The B Tech Mechanical Engineering fees is approximately INR 2 lakh to INR 12 lakh.

Top-ranked colleges in India provide admission to students on the basis of entrance exam marks; but , a good number of private B Tech Mechanical Engineering colleges also give admission based on Class 12 merit. They often take additional assessment rounds, like the Group Discussion or Personal Interview. These colleges are known for their excellent learning environment, practical exposure and, most importantly, placement records.

Q. What is the selection criteria for BTech Mechanical Engineering course?

A. The selection criteria for the BTech Mechanical Engineering course involve both Class 12 merit as well as entrance exam scores. Some colleges admit students taking into account their Class 12 board exam marks and often take extra rounds like the PI or GD for testing the general knowledge and technical aptitude of the students.

Other popular Mechanical Engineering colleges, including the IITs and NITs, have their admissions strictly based on the entrance exam scores like JEE Main and JEE Advanced. One has to get a very good rank in the exam to be able to get a seat for BTech Mechanical Engineering. Meanwhile, some institutions may give 50-50 weightage to both Class 12 merit and entrance test scores.

So, it is always better to visit the official college website of the institutions you want to get admission to and check for their specific selection parameters that obviously include the basic eligibility requirements of 50 to 60% marks (75% for the IITs) in the PCM subjects in Class 12 and the entrance/merit-based admission process.

Q. What is the admission process for BTech Mechanical Engineering?

A. Firstly, you must check the eligibility criteria for the BTech Mechanical Engineering course at the colleges you wish to apply to. Usually, it falls between 50 to 60% marks in Class 12 in the PCM stream. This can differ from one college to another, as for the IITs, you will have to get a minimum of 75% in Class 12 board exams.

Next step is to appear for the entrance exam. If the college offers merit-based admissions, that would be great. Otherwise, you need to work hard and get good marks in the entrance test. Further, you should fill out the application forms of the colleges you're targeting.

After the results are out, you should apply for the counselling session that takes place at colleges for the seat allotment purpose, on the basis of your rank. Finally, you can go to the college to pay the course fee and get your seat confirmed.

Q. Is there any entrance exam needed for admission to BTech Mechanical Engineering?

A. While several private colleges and universities also offer admission to students on the basis of their Class 12 marks, most of the top Mechanical Engineering colleges in India admit students on the basis of valid entrance test scores.

The NITs and the IITs need valid JEE Main and JEE Advanced scores respectively, for providing admission to students to the BTech Mechanical Engineering course. So, it is always better if you give the entrance test to keep both the options open, merit as well as entrance, and then choose the best college for pursuing the course. Rest, the final decision is yours.

Q. Is there a provision for lateral entry admission to the BTech Mechanical Engineering course?

A. Many BTech Mechanical Engineering colleges in India provide lateral entry admission to 3-year engineering diploma holders either on the basis of merit or via lateral entry admission entrance tests. You can directly get admission in the 2nd year of BTech Mechanical Engineering course in this case.
